After everyone told me to ask her out I went back and asked her if she'd like to get coffee some time. She already has a boyfriend but she told me that I was really sweet. Oh well I guess I'm single for another day. But one day! One day I'll have a cute short haired girlfriend!

You need some party trick.

No, really.

You get that same cop out answer every time, that "she has a boyfriend." Then you just step back, and in true 'hey, hold my beer' fashion, just ask her if he can do "this."

Then you do whatever party trick you've learned.

It's that easy. ©

Of course you will. You know that getting turned down won't kill you so you'll be able to ask the right one when she comes along.

Boyfriend, eh? Hmm. Would be real (un)fortunate if something were to happen to him...

another piece of random internet advice: being asked out is a risky proposition for a girl, and any way you can minimize the uncertainty aspect of the whole thing makes it easier for them to say yes.

Think of it like this: a man walks up to you on the street and says "good afternoon sir, would you like to take over payments on my car? I need an answer immediately."

Your natural inclination is going to be to turn him down, because you understand that there's a large amount of risk and reaponsibility involved with car ownership and it's the kind of decision that can't be made seat-of-your-pants like that.

If, however, the same gentleman were to ask, "would you like to come test drive my miata? I just don't drive it enough and am looking for someone who likes cars to sell it to because it deserves a driver who appreciates it. All you'd need to do is make the last two payments and it's all yours", you'd be all over it like white on rice because 1) it's a specific low-commitment situation ("it's just a test drive!"), 2) it's relevant to your interests ("I'm a driver who would appreciate it!") and 3) it's got the potential to be the deal of the century.

How can we apply this same logic to asking a girl out? Simple—change "hey, wanna get coffee sometime?" into "hey, you like anime, right? Some friends and I are getting together this Thursday to marathon code geass, you should drop by." Once again, you've made it specific and low-commitment ("it's just hanging out with friends on a Thursday!"), made it relevant to the person's interests ("I've been meaning to watch more anime!"), and offered them a potential deal of the century ("he is really cute..."). Obviously if she actually does have a boyfriend there's still more work to do, but then if she comes back with that you can always backpedal with "oh no I just meant to hang out" and you've still got an opportunity to build a friendship with another person into the same stuff as you!

Good for you for asking! It is so much better to fail quickly, if indeed you don't get the answer you were hoping for. You had the guts to ask, and you'll have the guts to ask the next lucky participant. Kudos.

What? What kind of sick woman puts smileys on a receipt just because. Now I know waitresses sometimes do that to get bigger tips, but not a regular cashier. Sorry man, but at least you asked. Who knows they could break up in the future, and she knows you're interested now.
