Yes, I can't make up my mind on a winter car. There's too many options to choose from. But what do you think of this somewhat clean-looking 318ti for $2200?

Needs more California sunroof!
(That's actually a NP, look into it)

I will then. What's that California sunroof?

A big, full length sunroof made out of cloth.
Think Fiat 500c, but it doesn't include the rear window.

That's illogical for a winter car. :P
But oh so funny to think about!

Not as illogical if you think you'll be driving this other times if the 944 needs work or something, which it will.

Yes. These are facts, but this is a BMW. Which I imagine should be rather expensive to maintain as well; especially if something breaks on it?
Which is why this is my alternative:

And yes, it will have snow tires.

The E36 is supposed to be rather reliable I think.
My girlfriend's dad's 328i has something like 160k on it and hasn't given him any issues in the 2 years he's owned it.

That's pretty good!

My roommate's got one (that I originally bought, sold to a mutual friend, who then sold to my roommate). 199k on the clock, still running strong. The 1.9L is a freaking tractor motor. That said, it's pretty slow.
They're a LOT of fun to drive, though. Rear subframe / suspension is shared with the E30/Z3, but regular E36 front end. That means it's s a bit more tail happy when pushing through apex's, and a bit twitchier on snow, but nothing a good set of tires wouldn't solve.
$2,200 is a pretty good price. Most clean examples are between $3-4k.

A RWD lightweight hatch without stability control for a winter car in Detroit? I don't think you know what to look for....

Maybe I don't, but it's what I want to have...
Or this:

Which would you take. Neither is not an acceptable answer.

I own a '99ti and previously a '97 ti. I daily drove the '97 year round in upstate NY (i.e. Ive seen more snow than most people in Alaska) with studded snow tires and it was perfect. The only real issue on these cars is the cooling system which really needs to be replaced every 100k miles as the water pump impellers break. With an automatic its painfully slow but with a manual the M44 is actually a very rev happy engine and is pretty fun. (Its essentially an E30 318is which is adored by most everybody) You can probably knock the price down to $2k or under so its definitely a good value so long as there aren't any major mechanical issues.
