The older car is harder (theoretically) to repair and source parts for it, and has less standard safety features.

You might be right on the safety features, I remember on top gear they claimed the new golf gti was cheaper to insure than most quickish cars because it has that thing where it brakes automatically and radar guided cruise control.

Yep they messed up my registration and called it a sedan. When they fixed it, it reduced my insurance

American insurance can be pretty weird too. I remember when I bought a newer, heavier, more powerful, faster, rear wheel drive vehicle, and my insurance went down. Why? Because it was a pickup truck.

I'm glad we've got cheap insurance here. Costs me $160ish CAD per month. I'm 22 and it's a a turbo Cobalt.
