Stage lighting, according to Wikipedia, still uses Whitworth thread, as do some mic stands. Also, some lenses, and Meccano, of all things. Also also, it wormed its way into Brit pipe, thus ISO, thus made metric its bitch.

it mentions camera threads, but all the cameras that i know of use 1/4-20 ANSI and its universal with any other 1/4-20 that I've ever known. Also, the 3/8th size is 3/8th-16 ANSI

The camera threads application is mostly 3/8" and "close enough" from what I took from it - not actually the same, but with spec for light fit...
Whereas, with the lens spec, it was some wacky German going "hey, this size is perfect!".
Just about everything Whitworth-sized on a Rover is BSF, so there's no perceivable overlap, unlike the coarse stuff, which would overlap here and there.

Is it a big deal? All I know is the hanging nut on a stage light clamp is a 1/2-inch square and the thread works pretty well, that's all that really matters.
