1) Built automatics > manuals in a drag race, where muscle cars are predominate.
2) Automatics are usually cheaper, at least from my understanding with Fords. If I wanted a 4 speed toploader in my '70 Mustang, that would be $800 for the transmission (minimum for one not needing rebuilding), then $150-$250 for the pedal and linkages.
Or, I can spend $75 on a 3 speed FMX and $20-$30 on a shifter.
