2 new tires? Nope, 8 (!!)

Ok, so this "new" car (second hand, owned since februari this year) has all-season tires. Not really a fan of those, since they are, after all, a compromise. But hey, that's what the car came with.

So, the front tires are worn past their 3 mm indicators. Still well above the legal limit of 1.6 mm (2.2 and 2.4 mm) but common sense dictates that I should replace them.

The next question then becomes: Do I replace the two front tires with new all-season ones? There is enough thread depth on the rears. The other option is to get 4 new summer tires ( and get a set of winter tires on steelies). That's actually quite a tough call. Keep the compromise, and spend money on two tires? Or go for a proper set-up (my opinion) and get 8 (!!!) new tires and 4 steel rims instead? It's either €220 for a pair of 16" all-seasons, or €325 for 4 new 16" summer tires and another €510 for 4 15" winter tires on 15" steelies. (205/55/R16 and 195/65/R15 respectively.) Prices are all-in, balanced and mounted.

Well, it has been decided for me. Because cupping. So the rear tires have to go sooner or later too.

That's hella expensive ! Recently replaced the front tires on my father's Passat (16' 225/45 in 91W) and we got them for less than 90€ each (mounted and balanced).

I was lucky enough to find, a few years back, 4 summer tires on rims for my Xsara for 300€ :)

I'm a huge proponent of separate summer and winter tires. Nothing matches a winter tire if you live where there is wintry weather. Nothing grips like a summer tire in summer...

Michelin Energy Saver+ tires in size 205/55/R16, mounted and balanced, for € 77,59 a piece isn't that bad. I don't want to skimp on tires. Weirdly enough, the higher speed rating V-rating is cheaper than the lower H-rating. So it's €310 for a set of 4.

Likewise, €128 for a Michelin Alpine 4 195/65/R15, including the steel rim and shipping , isn't bad, I think.

The Netherlands aren't that Nordic.

Last winter my winter tires (for the Citroλn Xsara I had then) were useless: no snow, just 3 days of having to defrost windows before driving. The 3 winters before though, they were not that friendly.

When I bough my Michelin Alpin last year I think I got them for 80€ each. But I bought them on the internet to get them cheaper.

The winter tires on steelies are online prices, pre-mounted, balanced and shipped. The summer tires are also internet prices, shipped to a nearby tire shop, mounting and balancing pre-paid. Even the disposal fee (which you pay in advance, on the tires you buy new) is included. I don't think I can get much off the price anymore.

Oh, sorry, I didn't see you were getting the steelies with them, it's quite a good price then.
