Hey guys,

Question for you. I went to the lube to get an oil change because I needed a quick one and didn't have any place to do it. I had asked for High mileage oil and they said they were out so they'd do the next best thing. A half and half mixture, which i assume was a blend of synth and non. I should've had them specify, but i was rushing and didn't think of it. Well i need some more oil in there because mine loves to burn oil. Now i have some high mileage oil in my car left over. Can I add that in or should i be worried about doing damage? Thank you as usual oppo

yeah, no worries. frankly the only reason to care about oil is on new engines, or very specific new cars with special requirements. I know im over simplifying it, but seriously, if you are burning that much oil, its not going to matter much what you put in there.

I've heard that once you put a combo of crappy oil and slightly less crappy oil in your car, you have to continue to use that same blend FOREVA! You'll have to go back to your lubrication mixologist for the life of the car.

My old asspat used to burn so much oil, I'd replace it all between changes. All I did was screw on a new filter and top it off.

3 minutes and I was done. It was great.

It sounds like you burn a lot of oil, in which case I would go for a slightly thicker weight than specified, and a high milage oil, but skip the synthetic or half and half. If you don't ever burn a drop of oil, it's wonderful to use synthetic for 10,000+ miles. If you are frequently adding oil, there is absolutely no point in spending the extra money.

At this point, just keep an eye on the level and add whatever you usually run when it gets low.

Oil is oil, just get the weight right.

I can't remember what the last high mileage i bought but i have a feeling it was half and half synthetic. I'll make a note to get non synthetic. Thanks!

Okay, so based on the comments here, is putting synthetic oil in my +100k miles car a waste of money?

From previous research I want to say if you didn't use it before I don't know if you'll benefit. Also putting synth in an older car can cause it to leak or burn. Synth is thinner and can get through older seals easier. If you've used synth through the life of the car it shouldn't be a problem, but if you switched from regular to synth you may not want to. If you aren't noticing leaks or burning off it may be fine. But take everything I said with a grain of salt as I am no where near an expert on the matter

Thanks. The shops seem to always recommend it, but I feared it was just because it was more expensive. Guess I'll do some research of my own as well.

I should add that I live in Houston where it's often hot/humid.

It's definitely possible.

That may help. I was looking for another link but can't find it. Give that a shot though!
