When you have tabs that you want to keep open long-term, like an item you wanna buy but aren't ready to do yet, right click it and select "pin tab" (in Chrome, I don't know if FF or IE have this feature). It'll minimize the tab to just a favicon on the far left so it doesn't take up much room.
