I don't need to tell cultured carnnoisseurs such as your good and bad selves why you should get all excited about the Goodwood Festival Of Speed, but seeing as I get to go there every year, I figure I should share some of it with you, right?

Lord March recently said that they're no longer trying to expand the size of the FOS. I can tell you right now that that's a damn good thing. Even though I spent two long days there, I didn't get to do everything that the ultimate petrol-headed garden party has to offer. Attendance is capped at 150,000 people over the whole weekend, which gives you an idea of just how popular this event is now. The fact that the organisers' focus has shifted to quality rather than quantity can't be bad for those that get tickets in time.

So what does it offer? Frivolous stuff, like a motorbike display team and air displays. Important stuff, like being the de-facto British Motor Show. Awesome stuff, like an exhibition, hillclimb event and, on Thursday, a day devoted to early birds, who get to test drive stuff on the famous hillclimb course.

You get to stand inches away from motorsport history's oddities, legends and rarities, and some current stuff too. This gives you something to do between booking a drive on Thursday at 8:00-ish and actually doing the damn thing in the afternoon. I didn't get there as early as I'd hoped due to mis-reading my phone's sat nav, but I did get to go flat-out up the hill in a French city car, so there's that. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !

The last couple of years, I've taken videos on my phone of F1 cars, Le Mans cars, dragsters, supercars and touring cars leaving black lines here, but they're always rubbish, so I just watched with my eyes this year (too poor for a GoPro). The batches of cars loop round in the afternoon, so if you miss anything you were looking forward to then just wait for the afternoon running. Prepare your ears. They'll thank you. NASCAR racers did massive burnouts, dragsters did MASSIVER burnouts, Lewis Hamilton did donuts and Jann Mardenborough did some serious driving in a GT-R or two. Sir Chris Hoy tried to turn a GT-R NISMO into a bicycle, as you well know. But don't worry, I took pictures of other stuff. Could I bother you for an even res higher image of that Lotus front wing? I've set it as my desktop background as is already but I my laptop has too damn many pixels.
