Its going to be tough to make a comparison with my JSW tdi since you will have the urea injection and I do not but here are a few things I have learned in 3 years:

1. I love this engine for its torque. go above 50 mph and just stick it in 6th and leave it. Fully loaded? high elevation? high speed? aint care: set the cruise and it will maintain it regardless of whats in your car or where you are.

2. The regen cycle on mine around town is annoying it will kick on the cycle after a few miles and if I turn off the car it still is cycling so it has to site there basting a fan to prevent burning to the ground.

3. City mileage isn't so great and by that i mean i still get 32-35, but given the high price of diesel it comes out to about a wash for cost compared to a high mpg gas vehicle in town.

4. freeway mileage is always 42 or above...always.

5. be advised that replacing the DPF is mandatory when it ashes out around 100-150 k miles, expect $1500-$2500. Ouch.

6. The turbo lag is a little annoying, at least for me at 4500 feet elevation.

7. no left foot braking and no turning off the TC...lame.

to add to all of these insights, the injection pumps are typical TDI junk and wonky when you hit high miles. dont know if you want to run it out to 200K+ miles, but they arent built like they were pre 03 or so

hmm, i wonder if its the low sulfur fuel, and I wonder if you could mitigate that with biodiesel or extra lubricity adding agents.

yeah that is what it seems to be. I wouldnt hit it with any bio save for the purest, lightest you could find.

I have the same engine in a '12 Jetta with a DSG transmission. Are you looking at a new Passat? I've had it since February with 19K miles on it and put about 13K miles on it. The only issue I have had was the Diesel Particulate Filter temperature sensor went out a month ago (repaired under warranty). Maintenance can be costly after carefree maintenance is out, especially if you take it to a dealer. Here is the link to maintenance schedules up to MY '13:

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php…

I have averaged around 40 mpg with 85% highway miles at around 75 mph. I have been told that the mileage improves as they get broken in and 45 - 50 is common (less around town). I'm sure some of that depends on how you drive and I'm not one to baby it.

I love the torque they make. I was apprehensive at first since I was used to and A4 2.0T Quattro, but was impressed when I drove it. If you get a model with the DSG transmission, it will take some getting used to b/c there is no torque converter to slip when you let off the throttle, but it doesn't take long to learn how to drive it smoothly.

Is there any specific info you were looking for?

yeah even my friends up here who have been making it for decades and have a refinery operation still struggle to make it good enough. Run some soap through an old VW IDI pump and it doesnt care...a $2K pump from the newer ones is another story
