Honda Fit. Hands down, this generation.
After being accustomed to VAG products, I felt that I nearly ripped the door off of a 06-ish Honda Fit. They're so damn light, and I felt extremely cramped and too big for the car. Especially from the backseat. (Co-Workers car) If I were to be in a crash, and got to choose. It would not be in a Fat Fit.

I'm mildly angered that they destroyed a nice looking Bel Air, but then again. Those are supposed to be boats, not marshmallows.

There's something pretty cool about driving with a steering wheel that WILL kill you if you hit ANYTHING.

I'm gunna say NA Miata is still the answer for this one. I just don't think I'd make it out in good shape if I was involved in a serious accident while riding in/driving one. Especially with the top down.

"What did him in officer?"
"We've had a string of deadly leaves in this area. We have a feeling that's what it was. Further investigation is needed, however."

Always bothered me that the huge cloud that erupts during that crash is probably rust. That would weaken an already weakly designed car.
Anyway, GM U-vans for me. Terrible crash test. In fact, there's one on display at the IIHS facility if I recall correctly.

A Volkswagen! I mean German Engineering is great, when it works...
Joking aside, anything older than crumple zones.

Looking at the IIHS crash test ratings for a 2008 Fit and 2008 Jetta there's not a ton of difference between the two.
But go ahead, keep being a VAG vag.

Beat me to it. Those vans were horrible new, now most of the ones running around here have their rocker panels completely rusted away. Those will fold up like a can of beer in an accident.

It may be just as safe, but I'd sure as hell feel safer in a Jetta.

So what you're saying is, you have an irrational preference towards a particular brand of vehicle which leads you to believe it is safer than another vehicle with similar crash ratings? ;)

I'd trust any car in a crash. My body's ability to function properly after it however? not as much

My buddy has a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo. He offers to drive a lot which is cool, but I'm reminded to create a will every single time I'm in the damn thing.
On the other end of the spectrum, my female friend drives around in her father's old 2006 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S (same color as pictured). Despite her being an absolute maniac behind the wheel, I'd trust that thing at triple the speeds the Isuzu. That thing is a complete 100% tank.

I have to be honest, I feel extremely safe in my GTI and that isn't exactly a large car.

Well, if you respect safety engineering, you have to think the Fit can punch a bit over its weight class. It ain't much to look at, but the Fit is a wonderfully designed and engineered car that gets more out of less than almost any car I've ever driven. I'd trust it as much or more in a crash than any other B class car, and I bet many C class cars, as well. Outside of the front-offset crash test, it does very well.

I fully agree, the GTI feels very solid and well built. I can't exactly say the same for the Fit.
