I can't fathom Italy without a Grand Prix, and it is likely that if this happens its place will be taken over by some other Italian track. Yet it would be a shame to loose such a historic & fast circuit from the calendar.

Ecclestone claims the historic race might be out of the calendar after 2016:

I don't think we'll do another contract, as the old one has been disastrous for us from a commercial point of view.

Ferrari's own Mugello Circuit is up for grabs, but it is unlikely because I don't remember it falling within F1 "modern safety" standards; a complain by some drivers when they tested there a few years ago.

Kinja'd!!!

Once again I have to disagree with Ecclestone:

"TV channels have split with digital broadcasting, and there's also Twitter, Facebook and other communication means, so young people are more distracted.

Yes Bernie, you just said it yourself. F1's lack of expanding media outlets and digital media embrace is part of the reason TV numbers might have dwindled. Why hasF1 been so slow adopting these? Because you dont understand them and do not know how to package them to capitalize from them.

Sure Ferrari not winning might be a cause for the drop in viewership in Italy ,but worldwide, I don't think so. The engine change has been beneficial to the sport in making it somewhat relevant to road going technology again (engine sound notes aside). But the sport has failed to gain from it, as US Republicans would say, as casual viewers have had too many gripes with the big technical changes that have been shoved down their throats.

And with the new standing restart rule set for 2015, the sport has failed to address some of the major set backs to the racing itself. I agree with Lauda's view on the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ; the excessive conserving tires & saving fuel B.S. ; and don't even get me into DRS. And all the chief authorities are thinking about is adding sparkling titanium skid blocks? Next thing I know, we'll end up with figure eight circuits a la "Dirt Showdown."

This is the same old / same old from him. He usually winds everyone up over an issue ahead of contract time. He's done it with every track. Hopefully the little prick goes to jail in Germany soon or croaks. I'm good with either.
