I'm planning on replacing the slipping old Turbo 400 in my '74 C10 with a rebuilt and shift kitted Turbo 400. Probably wont happen till mid September, but I was wondering how involved it'll be. In my delusional everything works perfectly mind, I see it being a day project. Jack car up, unbolt old trans, linkages, driveshaft, etc, then swap over the torque converter (needs to set in 3 times! 3!), then throw the mess back in. Presumably with a significant amount of detergent, I mean ATF, spilled on the driveway.

One of my favorite ages of Chevrolet truck. Tranny swaps really aren't too difficult, but it does help to have an extra set of hands. Unsuprisingly trannies are heavy.

Get a floor jack or work on your bench press

Have one. Forgot to mention, I have a good amount of mechanical/wrenching ability and a good amount of tools.

Yea I'll probably have a couple friends handy. Yea I like it, maybe even more than the 67-72s.

I've done the TH400 switcheroo but it was in a car that was fairly low and that plus a lack of a lift meant that it was easier to pull the engine and trans as a unit through the engine compartment. In a truck you have more room so YMMV.

Yea I'm hoping with a jack and jack stands I'll be able to get the truck high enough to drop the trans out the bottom. I've pulled engines before and don't really want to deal with that again.

I don't blame you a bit. Just remember to put some fluid in the torque converter and to be sure it is seated on on the trans shaft correctly. And enjoy your transmission fluid bath!

3 clicks! Gotta get those 3 clicks! Any suggestions on best way to minimize trans fluid spillage? I figure I'll vise grip the trans cooler lines, and just lay a bunch of kitty litter on the ground.

Get one of those plastic things you slide on the tailshaft to replace the driveshaft. That helps to keep it from leaking out the back, but there is going to be leakage from somewhere. Kitty litter is a solid idea.

You may need to loosen the motor mounts so you can tilt the back of the engine down to access the top transmission bolts. I expect the engine bay is a little bigger than on my Ranger so you may not need to do it, however if there isn't room from up top then it's probably necessary.

I was halfway through a trans swap on my first XJ40 before a tree fell on it.

It's a good amount of work, but you should be in good stead with a pickup. One of the problems was jacking the Jag high enough to get the trans out from underneath it, but that shouldn't be a problem for you.

Make sure all the bolts don't poke out the back of the bellhousing, or if they do attack them with WD40 and a wire brush to make sure they don't seize.

Other than that, it's just a matter of moving some very heavy objects and putting together socket extensions and UJs to get to all the trans bolts (although that depends on clearance).

Easier with 2 people, about doable with 1.
