While I love me some Porsche and LS motors, I wouldn't buy either of these.
Short wheelbase + mid-engined + plenty of power/torque - wide tires = crash. So no on the 914. And assuming (since the listing doesn't say) it's running a G50 transaxle, it sounds like it needs a rebuild ($$$$). If it's not running a G50, it should be replaced with a G50 ($$$$$). At least with this you could add some wide wheels/tires and some box flares to make it somewhat drivable.
The 944's weak point with LS-swaps is the transaxle. They're not meant for that much torque and tend to grenade when you work them too hard. Unless you're ripping up the floor pan and installing a T56, be sure to have a few extra transaxles on hand. Got to love the seller's high opinion of the car though:
Is this the fastest '84 944 in existence? Quite possible.
Is this the cleanest '84 944 in existence? Almost guaranteed!
Is this the cleanest '84 Porsche 944 V8 conversion in existence? Certainly.
I'm going to say he's wrong on all accounts. He used a base model for the build when he should have used a Turbo (951), so the brakes, most of the suspension, and transaxle (have I mentioned the transaxle enough?) need to be replaced with those off the Turbo.
Despite the short wheelbase on the Miata, this one looks very well built with a slew of proven parts. I would throw a cage in it and (try to) go drifting.
The 914 owner is the only one who decided to price his car reasonably. The Miata is about $9000 over-priced, while the 944 needs to come down about $20K. All the money and work into these don't make them worth that much over a unmolested example.
