My wife and I were talking today. She came and got me from physical therapy and took me out for lunch. Her Soul is really easy for me to get in and out of. I don't believe I'd be able to crawl out of the Taurus yet. So I said that I should get a truck. She's apparently behind it. It makes sense with my haphazard driving skills to have some chunky metal bumpers to ram into stuff. Guess I'm on the hunt for a four door fuel efficient truck.

GMC Canyon?
Looks to be a good (if only) option outside of a Toyota Tacoma if you want something smaller than an F-150.

how about a 3 door fuel efficient truck?

Tacomas, Rangers, the 1st Gen Canyon/Colorado all seem to do pretty well.
But no one talks of the Nissan Frontier...no one.

Are you able to comfortably climb up in to a full sized truck? Because those things are pretty damn high these days.

I'd need some straight injection of morphine for that to work.

Back injuries are the shits for sure. Canyon/Colorado are really not that fuel efficient so a full size truck would be my suggestion. Rangers and Sonoma's are great. Tacoma's too!

I think this is going to the option I lean to.

After she seemed to support the truck idea I followed it up with jeep. She wasn't buying it. I feel like the 4 door wrangler would be the best solution for me.

After truck I suggested Jeep and she just laughed at me. It would be the solution I'd prefer for sure.

and four doors?

Convince her on the wrangler. Explain how cheap a utility trailer is (fun welding project if you are so inclined) and that the wrangler is more versatile than a truck since you have indoor storage and the ability to tow a trailer.

Chevy trucks usually sit lower than their Ford equivalent, or at least that's the way it used to be and my parents can still get in and out of their '06 pretty easily even with it being a 4x4. That said, I don't think the gas mileage is anything to write home about.
![]() 06/23/2014 at 17:20 |

It's possible to get a manual with the Frontier, if you want to pay Nissan even more money.

Wrangler is the Miata of trucks. It is always the answer (when you are speaking of trucks and truck like vehicles).

I loved my Ranger. That said, given what you're dealing with, I can't recommend it. It felt more cramped and tight than my Fiat does. A Tacoma is probably the better option.

Where's VicariousILive? He drives a Tacoma and had a broken back and neck...he's the guy you want to talk to.

It is a roadster truck. It will have 0 doors when it is on the road.

Plus, how many 'Zuki trucks you see? Not many.
![]() 06/23/2014 at 18:58 |

I regularly drive a '13 base Frontier...I wouldn't recommend it without major interior upgrades. And about 100 more horsepower. Also where the bed meets the cab there is this weird zig where the cab bulges out over the bed, it's annoying to me. My brother owns a 2000 Frontier v6, and it's really pretty bad too, in comparison to most of the other small trucks available. In my opinion, if I were going to buy another truck for myself, I'd get either a Taco, a Dakota R/T, a Ford Lightning, or the one I really have a soft spot for, an S-10 ZR-2.

I am here.
When I was in my injured state I was being shuttled around in a Camry(please don't laugh at me). It was always very awkward to get into and since I couldn't bend my neck I barely could fit in to door sometimes because of the weird entry angle.
For you I would recommend Tacoma or Frontier. They both are very similar. I think the Taco has just a little higher clearance if I remember correctly but the Tacoma seems a bit more spacious in the interior. For such reason I went with the Tacoma. Unless you are less than 5'5" getting in should be no problem. I am 5'11" and its easy to get in and out there is no bending of the neck and back.
Also depending what you want to do with it but if you are going to use it as a daily driver with minimal offroad use. Just get the base model. I would advise against the TRD Sport it has a limited slip dif for some "sport" off rading but you have that useless scoop that makes me cringe. If I had to do it all over again I think ti would buy the base and do after market upgrades... diff lockers, lift and armor if that is the direction would want to go. If not base model will get you happy.
So what is your physical predicament that you have to do therapy?
![]() 06/23/2014 at 20:06 |

Assert your dominance Let her know it's your vehicle and you want a Jeep. It's smaller than a truck, get the same gas mileage, is more capable, has better resale value (I'd stress that point), you can take off the roof and doors (fun!) and you can get it in any trim, with any options you want with a manual. Plus, the cargo area is covered which makes it more practical for a DD than a pickup, and you can go off road anywhere.
![]() 06/23/2014 at 20:16 |

Find one of those older GM hybrid pick-ups.
I'd do some research on them, but they sound like they'd be efficient. 21 city/22 highway MPG
Now reliability, that's a whole different thing I'm not too sure about.
Ooor just go the safe route and get one with cylinder deactivation and 6-speed auto.

This is way true. My gf drove one the other day while at work.
"It's REALLY nice...."
So, that may happen somewhere down the road...

It'd be my daily driver I'm not an offroader kind of guy. We always need a truck to lug some crap around so it'd make dump and home depot runs and some minimal toy hauling.
I broke my lower back in two places shattering one vertebrea into four parts. I'm in a turtle shell back brace for the next 3-4 months.
![]() 06/23/2014 at 22:41 |

Geez. I broke my C-6. Broke the facet clear off. They fused C-6 to C-7 then a compression fracture on T-6. I wore a turtle shell for 6 weeks.
But lower back man that is tough. I tore my facet joint in my lower back and I was miserable although short term. I would take a broken neck over lower back problems any day. Anyways I can see would you would a truck.
How did you manage to shatter your vertebrae? If you don't mind sharing
![]() 06/24/2014 at 07:01 |
|
I don't mind. It was all over oppo already. I was on a ladder with a pole saw cutting a branch. I remember the branch starting to move then I was on ground with my feet in the air. I ended up with a compressive fracture to one of the last T's and shattered L2 into 4 spots. There are 12 pieces of hardware in my back now to fuse that all together.
The EMTs made me walk from my backyard to the ambulance and the emergency room was ready to stitch up the gash on my face and send me home when they got results from the ct. If my legs hadn't cramped up severely I'd have walked on it again. After that I got switched to a new Dr. and went and got an MRI. I was in surgery for 8 hours the next day. Now I'm fighting to get my leg strength back.
I'm in this shell for at least 2 months but probably more.

Don't forget you could go a little older and get a ZR2!
Cheap and easily 350 swappable is the 4.3L isn't quite enough for you.
