I can't figure out why a bunch of gawker/jezebel/kotaku regulars and troll burner accounts keep trying to make !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! out to be at fault for not constantly staring left for the ENTIRE TIME he makes his turn. I now know where the idiots come from on the road. They look everywhere except where they're going.....
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Picture is relevant to my wants right now. I've dismissed over half a dozen comments that were too stupid to respond to or were obviously done by troll accounts. I think I dismissed more comments today than I've dismissed since beginning to comment a year ago. I can't wait for autonomous cars so that I might live long enough to drive my manual cars on tracks or designated roads or something. At this rate my cars will be smashed to bits by people trying to explain their accidents with "B-b-b-b-but muh left side! I wus lerkin left! I know I wus going straight but muh left! I hud to lerk left!" fucking mouthbreathers

I find rare joy in dismissing idiot responses. Learn to love the power. It rocks.

I have no desire to read the FP comments, but, defensive driving, where else is the threat coming from, except through one of the red lights?
You should never dismiss a lane of traffic at a red light as a threat until there are at least two or three stopped cars in it. Any less and some idiot can pile into the back of them and push them forwards into your path. Or like here, if there are no cars at all, fail to stop completely.

I saw one of those comments, it had a bunch of recommendations, and a bunch of responses agreeing with him.
IT CLEARLY WASN'T HIS FUCKING FAULT, HE DIDN'T RUN THE FUCKING RED LIGHT, THE OTHER GUY DID YOU DUMBASSES

Including the idiots that kept saying this was avoidable if he checked the intersection first but they clearly ignored the fact the person ran the light 9 seconds after the green. I saw the pictures he posted in the youtube comments and the car was pretty much right at the median when the crash happened. By that point you are sure that everybody is stopped.
And the point that talking on the hands free is somehow more distracting than having the same conversation with a passenger and that contributed to the accident.........I face-palmed hard on that argument......

FUCKING EXACTLY, talking on the hands free speaker is the fucking point of not-being distracted by driving. I hate people.

I couldn't disagree more. Here's why.
1) He delayed moving forward for a second or so. Anyone running the red light had a good 2-3 seconds to pass through and he probably did check his left.
2) That PT cruiser when it was approaching was probably a good 4-500 feet out if it was in motion at the time he checked.
3) The most imminent threat at an intersection like that has always been, in my experience, people in the opposing direction trying to make a right turn and not looking at people making a left turn because they assume the green arrow in their peripheral vision is a green light so they can go forward. I've almost hit multiple idiots who do that. I've been a passenger in a car that did. It was not an intelligent person who made the right turn into left turn traffic.
4) I have seen more people from the opposing direction assume the green arrow is a green light and go (and witnessed an accident) than I have people cut the red light that badly. In fact I don't think I've *ever* seen someone fuck up that hard.
It makes zero sense to me for the ST driver to take more than a passing glance, see the PT wasn't in his face, and proceed forward.

I try not to do it even if I disagree wholeheartedly in the spirit of discussion but sometimes.......some fucking people........I wonder how they've never chocked on their own spit.

As a fellow FiST owner, you understand my fear that one of these commenters will hit someone because they don't know how to drive. And that person could be one of us. All because their mothers wouldn't swallow that night.

Having a combination of idiots on the road and a family that's been the recieving side about 3 red-light related T-bones, one of which killed the other driver.. Yes, I look.
Shoot, I was in the back of the car in one of them. Little Toyota Corolla Vs Chevelle.. At least 180 spin. Just a few milliseconds and I'd be channeling this posting through somebody.
Can't prove a negative, but checking and delaying probably stopped a cross-meet a few times..
A stopped single row of cars at a double lane is just fate waiting for a distracted person to go through the light at speed. That was the impression I got from seeing the other driver.. not even a peripheral reaction till actual contact. I only think one of the 3 was somebody genuinely trying to beat a red light. They changed that intersection eventually..
But sometimes, that asteroid is going to get your Malibu.

Such a depressing thought to have. The fact that there's people like that in this world is just tragic.

Public service announcement to all the women in this world - Don't let another dumbass breed. Swallow.
......and wow that's the most sexist thing I've ever said....I think.

Well I do agree that you should always check the intersection for idiots running lights, 1-2 seconds is plenty before entering. The real issue was everyone saying that this crash would have been avoidable if he checked. By the time the PT came flying into the intersection (9 seconds after green), the FoST was already committed to the turn and 2/3s the way through the intersection. At this point his focus (no pun intended) should be making the turn, checking to make sure cars from the 2nd left turn lane don't enter your lane, and cars trying to make a right on red don't pull all the way out in front of you.

You seem confused about what defensive driving means. Please note that first of all it's something which is more than we expect from the average driver, so there's no blaming of anyone for not doing it. But we want to be the safest drivers we can be, so we try and learn from videos like this.
"It makes zero sense to me for the ST driver to take more than a passing glance, see the PT wasn't in his face, and proceed forward."
Except that he got hit by a loon. Defensive driving is about managing to avoid the complete idiots, utter maniacs, and so-on. Don't trust a red light to stop people.
You should take a good look to your left in that situation and assess the threat, then either dismiss it (if it's safe) or monitor it. Of course even then you might just be really unlucky, but you do your best to minimise the chances.

But I argue that by the logic of "avoid the complete idiots" I would be more worried about every other direction than the one he got hit from. I'd be more worried about someone behind me getting impatient or suddenly seeing the green light and charging at me. I'd be MUCH more worried about the person making the right turn. I'd also look to my right as it looks like he is in the left of the two left turn lanes and you KNOW at least two dozen people a day change which lane they're in in turn situations like that. At 9 seconds out, there is zero reason for him to have suspected that PT cruiser of not stopping. If that PT was doing about 40 mph then let's say it was spotted at just 7 seconds out as the driver begins to go forward. The PT is still 300+ feet away from the intersection. Plenty of time to safely come to a stop so I wouldn't be worried. I'd be much more worried about the person to my right who might decide they want in my lane, which happens often, or the person across from me suddenly deciding my green arrow is also theirs and trying to cut me off, which happens often, or the person behind me not noticing I haven't immediately put my pedal to the floor and is now about to rear end me, which happens occasionally.
Defensive driving in this instance would dictate that the PT isn't a threat. It's too far out and the signal switch happened too long ago. There are many more immediate threats at the moment of the accident that he was probably looking for.

"Defensive driving in this instance would dictate that the PT isn't a threat. "
The car that hit him wasn't a threat? What?!
And no, it wasn't the only threat. But it very obviously was a threat, since it fucking hit him.

Okay do you seriously spin your head around constantly at every turn? You don't. No one does. If you say you do you're a liar. All of these "Well he obviously didn't see it because he wasn't paying attention" are missing the fact that to avoid that accident he puts himself at risk of OTHER accidents and oh by the way, the PT could still stop altogether and make the rear-end collision he got from the guy behind him pointless. Then you'd be saying "WHAT AN IDIOT! Why didn't he just go? Obviously the PT wasn't going to hit him"
