What does "prestige" really mean when talking about cars?

I mean I get that some manufacturers have unique processes to building their cars or are specially developed from motorsport experience which makes the car "prestigious," but outside of that, I always thought it was some old buzzword from marketers who used to (maybe still do) push a Yukon instead of a Tahoe to someone who didn't know any better. But maybe someone does.

Is it a dealership experience? Parts quality?

I'd say a Buzzword. many parts used on higher end cars nowadays could even be shared to the entry level cars of the same company, but different brand.

"It'll make you feel like you're better than someone else."

also

"If you don't spend more money on basically nothing, you'll be below other people who did."

It is a buzzword, but it's generally used when you buy something for qualities it has outside of its character.

For example, a Jaguar might be considered prestigious because of its racing heritage. It doesn't matter how good or how bad the actual car is, that external quality makes it seem nicer.

BUT, if there's a series of bad engines, the negative press might remove that prestige. It's not the engine quality, which is internal, but the idea of how good the engines are, which is external, that contributes to prestige.

For me, a "prestige" car is any car that is more expensive and owes some of that up charge simply to the badge. Doesn't matter how much of that up charge you think is for the badge, if you think there's any amount of "we're charging that much because it's an XYZ", it's prestige.
