That twin throttle linkage would have been a bitch and a half to keep in sync I would imagine. Would really suck to realign them after some work.

We'll give the General credit where credit is due, the ZR-1 was a salvo against the Europeans, a statement that America could build their own super car (even if it did need help from Yamaha for the engine).
Credibility lost. Yamaha? Wut. Try Lotus, guys, and at the time Lotus was a recent GM acquisition.
Still, the problem with this Super Pony is the suspension. It may have been a "ZR-1 Killer" in a straight line, but Not around the bends. In addition, the LT5 can rev damn near forever, giving it another edge.
Also, I don't know about them, but when I think of the horsepower wars of the '90s I think of ZR-1 vs. Viper. The Mustang barely enters the conversation.

Came here to comment on the same bit about Yamaha. The LT5 was designed by Lotus, and built by Mercury Marine.

I was around the Turbo T-bird and 5.0 crowd in 1990. I think I have a good grasp of what Ford was doing at the time. This may have been able to take the Zr-1 in the quarter, but I think that would have been about it.

They tried and failed to complete the project, leaving the rest of us Mustang owners no choice but to build our own examples. With the plethora of aftermarket parts available for these cars, beating a ZR1 for half the cost or less of a ZR1 is just a few parts orders away from reality.

Sometimes maybe, but not always. Back in the 80's I had a 69 F100 pickup with a 429 BBF and a C6 auto, both mildly built. Corvettes of the day were not a problem, even with a few turns thrown in. The truck did not corner well, not even just a little bit. What it did do was run off and leave them so far behind in the straights that I had time to take the corners at a leisurely pace.
