why do some bikers decide it would be a good idea to not wear proper safety equipment, just a helmet. Is their comfort really worth a de-gloving?
If it is too hot hot to wear your gear, take you car!
And now a tvr tuscan

That thing looks like it should require a helmet too.

Also people who won't wear proper safety gear in the heat probably don't wear it in better weather either.

Easy. Nobody ever thinks "IT" will happen to them.
IT being a motorcycle or car accident, cancer, heart attack, personal bankruptcy, failing out of college, getting divorced, having an oops baby, etc etc.
Bad things only happen to OTHER people.

You know that at highway speeds, a helmet mainly exists to provide your family with an open casket funeral, right? I don't expect a vented jacket is going to be the difference between life and death. That being said, I wear all my gear when I'm going anywhere further than the gas station down the road because I'm too pretty for road rash.

It's 90 degrees with 90% humidity today and I'm in full armour. We'll not discuss the running shoes.

Stupidity and a "It can't happen to me" mentality.
Or they could just not give a shit about dying at all.

Exactly. A little sweat is worth avoiding some road rash in a best case scenario.

So, you're leathered up, but still want to shatter your ankles?
Seriously, gloves and boots are my "always" gear. Even if I don't have on the heavy leathers, etc, I like being able to walk.

at least its not michigan where it's legal to NOT WEAR A HELMET.
Favorite comparison I always bring up- I can hit a tree in my car at 25 mph without a seatbelt on and walk away, but it's illegal to not wear a seatbelt. A Motorcyclist can hit that same tree going 25 mph with no helmet and need an ambulance ride, but that's perfectly legal.
And yes most of them don't wear helmets
and yes I saw a guy in flip flops, shorts and a tank top with no helmet on a sport bike the other day...

Are you their mom?

Definitely not, their life they can do what they want. I have seen what can happen with out proper gear, it just perplexes me.

I don't ride, but it drives me crazy seeing idiots here in TX with wearing a wife beater, shorts, flip flops and a backwards ball cap. It may be all about your personal freedom, but it's also about my insurance rates.

Surprisingly, stupidity is not limited to any specific group of people.

Seriously, on a public highway, safety gear is like wearing your seatbelt as the plane crashes. It's a nice gesture, but it isn't going to do a damn thing. On a track, low speed backroads, etc, yea, it can do something, but a highway wreck? Splat.

the only good thing is technically they are supposed to pay a higher insurance premium to cover when they hit the previously mentioned trees.
The nice trick is I don't think it's legal to stop them "just to check their insurance" to see if they upped it to no-helmet level.

I see that on a daily basis, in the nice weather. I always look at the no helmet proper safety gear as a Darwin award waiting to happen. It also confuses me when I see people on the highway wearing anything but a full face helmet.

Psst. You hit a tree in just about any car at 25 mph unbelted, and you're not walking away. Trees aren't other cars, they aren't guardrails, they aren't jersey barriers, etc. Trees don't move, they don't dissipate energy.

I'm not saying you'd be feeling lovely.
I think you understand the point of the comparison and it is 100% accurate in it's intention.
And how about I up it to an F350 hitting a tree at 25
I think it would fair a hell of a lot better.
Point made?
Cool.

I didn't know that no-helmet had a specific higher rate. No idea if that's in effect in TX.

it was a requirement for it to get passed through MI government.
I'm not sure if it's on their motorcycle insurance or health insurance. But either way they gota pay more in case of those ... incidents.

Happens here every May/June. I love living in a University town. There are a ton of advantages and benefits, far outweighing the downsides, for me at least. But there is an interesting phenomenon that comes with it. Every spring semester, as the weather warms up a whole slew of people get brand new sport bikes, cruisers, and scooters, all with no gear (no helmets required in CO). Dumbest I've seen was a guy on a scooter in flip-flops, shorts, tank top, bare head, and texting. And then within 1 to 2 months, they're nearly all gone again.

Don't even get me started on Michigan laws.

Actually you would know how this works better than me, what's the insurance upgrade requirement for no helmet?
Is it on the motorcycle insurance or on health insurance?

I'm not sure because I always wear a helmet and didn't even look into such a thing, but I don't recall being asked if I would be wearing a helmet at any point while I was purchasing my insurance through Progressive.

OK.
I think you have to ask for it if you're going to be stupid and not wear one.
Good for you for being more intelligent (not that I doubted you)
BTW Next month - July 12th, double car cruise over on my side of metro-detroit. There are seriously 2 car cruises, one east-west and one north-south that touch each other making an upside down T shape to drive in a big loop in the Wayne/Westland area.
I expect you guys to be in attendance lol
