Day two of my new job, and I'm already loving it. The shop is the perfect place for me. The guys I work with know their stuff and are happy to teach me. They're also really laid back and don't get worked up over stuff. Plus, I get the added benefit of being around classic cars all day. You can't argue with that.
So far I have done a couple big projects. My first day started off with tearing the engine out of a Cub Cadet because it had timing issues. I tore into it, but we still haven't found the issue. Maybe it's not the most exciting start, but I was more than happy. Trust me, it beat pumping gas by a long shot. After the mower, I graduated up to an '81 Chevy street truck with a 355. I had to put a new timing cover on it, because it started leaking when they put the new oil pan on.
I quickly fell in love with the new Craftsman Universal set I bought, because just about every bolt was an ARP 12 point, so the spline drive came in handy. I also broke in my new Craftsman air ratchet. That's definitely going to find a lot of use.
Well, Friday after tearing everything down, it was all cleaned in the hot tank and I spray-painted it all black. While waiting for that to dry, I helped the other guy I work with do plugs and wires on our boss's Silverado.
Today, first thing, I rebuilt the '81. I fell in love with that also after I heard it run. My next project was what we call the Crapshoot Chevelle. We call it that because we really have no idea whats going on with it, it was a project someone had started, then it was brought to us so we're not sure what point we're at yet. Anyways, my project for today was to go over the whole car and make sure everything was tightened down as it should so we have a place to start. prior to that, all they had done was start the engine, and push the car in. I'm still working on the Chevelle. I had to do a couple other little things and didn't get the car "done." I'm sure it's still got a long way to go.
It's a 20-footer SS or SS clone (I'm still too new to know the difference.) It's a really nice car, until you get into it and see what all is really wrong with it.
If the future is anything like the first two days, I'm gonna really know Small Block Chevys. I'm not complaining about that.
This shop is seriously like going to a car show every day, and getting paid for it. I need to get a camera there. I really want to post pictures here, I'm sure y'all would love to see some of the stuff I'm doing.
I still can't get over the fact that I just graduated High School last Wednesday, and I started my dream job two days after. I've always wanted to work on classic cars. I never thought I'd be doing it at this point in my life. Especially not at a place I love this much so soon.

That sounds great! Maybe one day you will open your own shop. Good luck.

I'd love to open my own shop doing this stuff. The guy I work with is in his 30's and has been working with our boss for around 15 years. I'm sure once our boss retires he will take over, and if I'm still at this garage at that point I'd love to stay on.
