Open it up to any production car that wants to put in the necessary safety equipment and let them have at it. Hello 918, P1, and The Ferrari LaFerrari

Kind of my thought as well. It would essentially boil down to three classes

1) Prototypes with a set limit, perhaps 3L NA and 2L turbo, and maybe a 750kg weight minimum. Other than that, anything goes within reason and safety.

2) Sports Cars/Supercars with minimum production standards, say 25-50 cars. These would have to be production vehicles, with allowances for race-preparedness. Limit engines to 5L NA and 3.5L turbo.

3) GT Cars, massive hard-number production limits, and maybe even a sliding scale of displacement/weight.

Would give Ford a reason to get off it's ass for another GT

Nah to the engine limits on the production vehicles. I want to see the best cars the world can manufacture duke it out on track. I want to see the 3 hyper cars go nuts with racing tires roll cages and race-prepped aero kits. Might give another company a reason to go through the design exercise of building a similar car.

Old production cars as well?

Sure why not? Open it up to everyone, though I suspect in order to be competitive in class the current big 3 would be the only ones competing for the win.

To me this would be what sports car racing should be. Production chassis and engine. Modifications for safety, put them on slicks and have at it. You want to make a more competitive car, put it in the show room. That is why I think the Mclaren F1 GTR is the most significant car in the last 50 years. It is the only car since the GT40 that you could drive to the race, win and then drive off. The definition of a sports car race.

You aren't far off. Remember this weird LaFerrari which sounded like it had an F1 V6 and had Le Mans style body work even thought it looked nothing like a LMP1 car? Well get this. Graham Goodwin said on Midweek Motorsport a couple weeks back that manufactures are pushing for DTM style standard carbon tubs with hypercar bodywork. He said McLaren/Honda have been hinting at that, and might be happing in 2017 or 2018.

no, the engine rules in prototype 1 are the best theyve been. do not dick with it anymore. 'heres your fuel, build any engine you want' wins over that overly regulated spec crap.

sports cars/supercars is easy: stock derived engine, period. you want to use your 3.8L v8 turbo? fine, you have to use essentially stock engines. suspension and aero must all be stock derived. like a spec miata class but with more than miatas.

I wish this generation of cars would bring back GT1.

GT1: RWD, AWD, hybrids and beat your chest manufacturer support. LeFerrari, P1, 918 RSR. Hell, throw an old Gumpert or Ascari or Noble in there. 7.0l max

GT3: RWD like today's GT-Pro rules. Factory or private teams. 5.0l max.
