I accidentally threw my Iphone down a set of wooden stairs, onto the concrete floor of my basement. It didn't break.

Well then lucky you, those things are dense and imbalanced, the iphone 5/5s however is very balanced and it very unlikely that if you drop one it will fall at an angle that could cause a crack.

How the hell do you "accidentally" throw it down a set of steps?

My iPhone 4 is surprisingly robust. I've dropped it a few times and in the moments before I've picked up I would cringe in horror that my poor iPhones screen might've cracked. It has survived every drop with minimal damage. I have a case on it now though.
