Are Mk3 Golfs with VR6's rare at all? My friend just bought one (5-speed, 3-dr, $1000) and I'll admit, I didn't know the VR6 went that far back. Of course this is the kind of thing that could've completely gone over my head sooooo

I don't think they're that rare. I've had a couple of friends own them over the years.

I was just reading, looks like the Mk3 is the first Golf to have one

It was. I believe it appeared in the Corrado and Passat before that. $1000 isn't a bad price if the car is in halfway decent shape.

Oh yeah it seems like a stellar deal to me. Drives fine and interior and exterior are both pretty clean. Just a couple of old-car-quirks hanging around.

I consider the VR6 to be a musical instrument. Just sounds so good.
