Actually...there's going to be a part 2 from the pits too, and likely a few other parts. But I digress.
When I made this year's pilgrimage to Indy, I ended up shooting next to a guy named Jim on several occasions. Jim happened to be a guy that's shot for IMS and the series for the last 50 years. After a few conversations, Jim offered to get me Pit Lane creds for a day of practice.
I'm not the best author of big posts here, much preferring the occasional snarky retort in someone else's thread. I've never been in the pits before, and I'm hoping that these images, and those that follow in subsequent posts do a decent job of showing what it is that I saw.

Oh how I wish formula would have rears likes this. I'm unfamiliar with Indycar so forgive my ignorance, but what is the benefit of this? I'm guessing air flow over the rear tire but wouldn't you want warm air not cold (for grip)?

Not as much of an aero aid, as it is a "keep the guy behind you from cutting your tires and driving over your car" aid. Truly designed as a safety component to begin with.

Oh I see. So I guess that means they draft alot like in nascar?

On ovals, yes. Road courses, not so much. It's not a bump draft like NASCAR by any measure. These do have fairly advanced aero, however limited it may be by the spec.
The "bumpers" tend to help more in street course pile ups too.
