One of the projects I've been trying to do this spring is to deal with the old flower beds between our house and the sidewalk. It is a 3' wide stretch on two sides of the house(house is on a corner lot and right against the corner of the lot). They are overgrown, full of old plants, weeds & grass and generally a mess. They are also graded such that the water runs back onto the basement.
Plan is to dig out the old plans & extra dirt, re-grade them and plant a combination of clover & mint that will look decent, require no maintenance and choke out any other weeds that try and grow there. I have been talking since last year about doing this, and how nice it will be to not have to weed-wack the grass that grows hip-high in the damn beds(especially since the weed-wacher was stolen out of the shed two weeks ago).
I pulled my shoulder a few weeks ago, so the whole project stalled. Then I found a guy that needed fill dirt. He agreed to dig out a big chunk of the bed in exchange for all the extra dirt I don't need.
He came today while I am at work and did the digging. After he left my girlfriend helpfully raked the beds, AND SPREAD GRASS SEED ALL OVER THEM. She just sowed them with exactly what I have been trying to get out of them, despite all the time I've spent talking about getting the grass out, and exactly what I would be planting instead.
So instead of cleaned out low-maintenance beds, I'm going to have to try and get as much of the seed as possible out, then send the whole summer pulling up grass to keep it from spreading and taking the bed over again.
And she wonders why I feel like she doesn't listen to me.
Thanks for putting up with my whinging, here are a couple customs for your trouble.

Reminds me of the time I tied my soon to be roommates mattress to the roof, then cinched down the ropes extra tight by closing the doors on them to tighten them further.
It was sort of hard to get one door closed, when I finally got it shut, my soon to be roommate proceeded to open the door I had just struggled to close. When I asked her why she did that she said "I wanted to see if it was shut". I remarked "It's not shut now, you opened it". Brilliance.

Some friends ended up being free later in the day, so I was able to get it over to my place and start working on it. Ended up cutting it so close That I left them to close the garage door & lock up so I could race to the trains station to pick up my g/f coming in on a 6:30 train.

My advantage is leaving all the garden stuff to my fiance. I do the dishes, cook, and take care of the car. (barely a chore). She gardens and does the rest of the cleaning. It's a victory for someone who hates gardening and vaccuuming.

It was SUPPOSED to be I handle outside (all year round) - cars, yard, snow removal, leaf removal, clean up after the dog, etc and she handles inside - cook, clean, laundry.
Somehow I do a whole lot of cooking and cleaning...and the most she's done outside is hang a hanging basket flower thing lately.

well, at least she still does the laundry, which is good because I always fuck something up when it comes to the laundry.

Mix up some herbicide in a sprayer, and spray the dirt. Not round up, but herbicide like this http://www.homedepot.com/p/Compare-N-Sa…
mix it a bit strong, spray it down on the dirt, then cover the dirt with rocks or something. Nothing will grow there for a year.

tl/dr what's the problem? j/k I have been cleaning my dad's truck for the first time in forever, and I swear you probably could have doen at least one bed with the dirt from just the driver's floormat! I swear, there was at least 3 cups of dirt in the mat alone. Man, this has been a long week getting that thing pretty again. Sorry to hear about the Gf pain though. It's a lose / lose right there.

Me too. Her sweaters are like camo'd in the rest of laundry and before I know it I have shrunk them.

oh yeah.
Nothing ruins the extra points of actually doing a load of laundry like killing a sweater (or dress.....)
