So I got an oil change about 6000 miles after my last oil change, on a semi synthetic, I usually like to go 5000 miles or less on those. But somehow I just went way past on this one. Anyways, the SHO was a quart low when they changed it, should I be concerned? Or is this normal for a direct injection engine and oil that's degrading. Another thing is, my car wasn't giving me a change oil message till yesterday, a week after my oil change. Car seems to be running great, so I am not very concerned, but I don't exactly like to hear my 2010 is a quart low, especially before Ford's factory programmed oil changed notice while using an oil that THEY recommend for my car.

Not me pictured, I'd never run a license plate that reads beefcake. Haha.

My sister went 12,000 miles without an oil change on the Forester. I'm glad it's a leased car.

I would not worry about the extra thousand, especially if you are using good quality oil AND a good quality filter.

Modern cars are not as hard on their oil as older stuff. That doesn't mean you can neglect it to 10,000 miles but an extra thousand won't kill you.

As for using the quart, that is probably within tolerance for your engine.

Its probably normal. I've heard things like that for other cars that 1 qt between oil changes is within factory spec. Might say in the manual?

Do you drive it hard? Pushing the motor hard will cause it to use more oil. With the semi synthetic oils that Ford uses in the dealer the extra 1000 miles won't hurt. If it was full synthetic you'd have no problems going an extra 5000 miles.

Why are you running semi-synth? Just go fully synthetic, it's worth the small difference in price, especially in a SHO.

Haha yeah, someone else on here had a story of a car that hadn't ever changed the oil in like 60k miles and it still ran, but damn.

Haha, I used to race jetski's and they announce your name/number/sponsors at the beginning of each race, I always listed Beefcake Racing as one of my sponsors, lol.

I have a friend from home that has 3 lights constantly on in his car. Change Oil, ABS, and Check engine. It was like this for a week (we were both home from college for the winter break, so we hung out a few times), and I asked him the last time he had his oil changed and the lights checked. His response was not sure, he thinks when he bought it all of that was done. He bought it like 3 years prior. I refused to ride in it (or drive anywhere he said he would drive that week) until he got everything checked.

Is that why her check engine light was on?

No, she broke the fuel cap somehow. The car is under warranty so Subaru fixed it for free.

...did it snap in half through overtorque? I have heard of the seals going, but I've never really known anyone to break the cap.

With a twin turbo V6, I would be surprised if you didn't burn oil. I bet you have been about a quart low at every oil change, but nobody said anything because that's not a surprise.

It's the first turbo/DI car I've owned, so this is new to me, haha.

You should be fine, however, I would start using full synthetic for the peace of mind. Synthetic oils are great for high temps and bearing speeds of turbos.

I will do this on my next oil change me thinks. Is Valvoline's synthetic good stuff?

Probably because the Motorcraft semi-synthetic is very cheap and according to the SHO engine gurus I've talked to, is very nearly as good as Mobil 1.

They told me that on the old v8 and Yamaha v6 SHOs, when they tore down the engine for rebuild, they could tell if the owner had used Motorcraft blend or Mobil 1, but they couldn't tell any difference between the two. The rings would still be in good shape and everything would be clean.

In my eyes, oil is a minor expense when talking about high performance engines...and I assumed he was talking about the new turbo SHO.

I understand. My thinking tends to be that motor oils are slippery, and having some in your crankcase is a good idea :).

Plus, if you can save $3/qt getting semi-synthetic rather than Mobil 1, then after 190,000 miles you've saved enough money for a new set of tires!

Any synthetic is probably fine. As far as brands go, it's probably personal preference. If it meets the standards for synthetic oil, it's good to go.

I generally use Castrol Edge for my synthetic based on my experience of "never having a problem with it," but that doesn't mean its any better than anything else out there. Most people seem to think Mobil 1 is good oil, others say Shell Rotella is good oil and still others prefer any other brands. The only way of knowing which is the best oil for your car is by using each one and then sending them in for UOA (used oil analysis) after you've used them. Blackstone Labs is pretty popular for this service and they only charge $25 which seems pretty reasonable. You get a table like this with all sorts of data and you can pick which one causes the least wear on your parts (or makes you feel best). The comments blurb seems to be pretty helpful, but you will probably find that most oils treat your engine similarly.

6000 miles and used a quart?

Doing pretty good, sir. Many manufacturers' specs before they will service internal engine for warranty oil usage is a quart every 2000 miles.
