The Mrs. and I are expecting a baby boy in late October (our first) and it was brought to my attention that Recaro makes child seats and strollers. Given the number of stairs in and out of our house I have no intention of buying one of those crazy combo deals that transforms from car seat to stroller to highchair. Anybody have any experience with their products? I'll also take other tips and suggestions.

I dont have first hand experience but a very close friend of mine has two Recaro baby seats and he loves them.

Plus they look cool...

I don't have firsthand experience but I haven't read anything good about them and they didn't score well in euro ncap. I'd say avoid.

You may wish to re-evaluate your thoughts on the "combo deal".

We have one and it works great to be able to transfer a sleeping baby without waking him or her. Plus you can move them from car to stroller very easily if you have to go to the store, etc etc.

Do not underestimate the shitstorm that can happen if you take a calm baby out of their seat and then try to put them back in minutes later. Or the shitstorm if the baby wakes up as you take them out of the carrier.

The only people I've seen with them are car enthusiasts; every car enthusiast I've met has them. Everyone I've met who has them swears by them.

I've never met a child that was injured in one so it's got that going for it I suppose.

The Amazon reviews say they're great. They are also side impact tested, which many car seats are not. Although I also have to agree with the aforementioned sleeping baby transferral. The Recaro would be great a little later, like maybe 6 months, but the ones with the detachable base and carrying handle are a must for newborns.

Father of two speaking here. swallow your pride and get the combo. Stairs be damned, it was worth it for us.

The combo is the way to go especially considering the age it's for is when you have to be the most careful. Also when they hit toddlerhood and fight in a way that makes you consider calling your local priest you will miss the quick release bracket in the car that infant seats use.

Yeah, can not be said enough. My oldest is 4 and just grew out of throwing fits for the most part. Still happens on occasion but he's in a booster and puts his seatbelt himself so it's more of a matter of fighting to make him put it on.

My favorite part is actually getting them to fall asleep in the car, easiest way in my house, and then carrying upstairs in the same seat and letting them nap in it. I got so much more sleep when they were babies.

I have a feeling this is going to devolve into a lot of parents warning to not miss the infant carrier. I miss using one and you will too if you buy one and then move to the other seats. Makes the whole job many times easier. Ours didn't have a z handle or any other more ergonomic handle was the only thing I didn't like. I would also recommend going to a baby store to compare multiple seats to give you a good idea of feel and fit.

Your kids will have their own likes and dislikes as well. My son hates his giant plush graco my wife thought he'd love for being like a pillow but if he falls asleep or it's slightly warm it turns into a sweatbox.

You're probably going to want to do the car seat thing in stages. Early on you'll have a rear-facing deal while the baby is small, so the suggestions about a carrier system are good. Once the boy is bigger, you'll switch to front-facing and then you may want to ditch the carrier for a latched-in seat (unless your forearms are like Popeye and to carry the seat + 30lb child).

Congrats on the little guy!

No experience with Recaro - we have a Britax bucket for our little guy and Graco toddler seats for the older ones.
