Is damage a prerequisite for whiplash?

Friend was in a small accident and not damage was done, but the lady is claiming whiplash.

negative, its a essentially a muscle injury, and can occur in surprisingly low impact crashes. its tricky to diagnose, and typically is not observable until some time after a crash. so, it's a huge grey area, and I suspect lots of folks claim it without having it

Depends on your jurisdiction, but in general, yes. It is actually possible to get whiplash without any damage being done to the vehicles involved - unlikely, but possible. The chances are that it's a bullshit claim, but it may be hard to disprove even so.

As long as your friend's insured, you ought to be able to leave this one with the insurers. They'd certainly be the first people I'd contact for help.
