What the heck?

Kinja'd!!!

Picking up my pet cockatiel from the vet, and on the way back, she tells me "Somebody is giving away a Karmann Ghia, it's not running though." Either it's a SCORE, or an extremely rusty piece of crap.

I'd say do it, If you get it you won't be making a loss and if towing costs are counted in just sell it on CL if you don't think it's worth it.

Just checked with her again, she doesn't know where she found it, other than "the internet". Kijiji comes up with two restored at $8000-10000, and a parts car for $550. Just a rumour at this point.

Probably a bust though. My mom doesn't know, other than she saw it on the "internet".

Well then I guess that's not a picture of the car in question; if it were then I'd already be asking you what town you live in and suddenly "feeling a little under the weather at my desk".

If you do find it, just be sure to bang on the floor pan a little bit, and also check for rust in the wheel wells, and in the heating duct tracks that run along the sides of the car, between the doors and the rocker panels.

A non-running Karmann-Ghia in decent shape is only a lucky junkyard trip and ~$3k away from a daily-driving sub-2000lb hoon toy.

It's definitely not the image of the one in question, It's just rumour at the moment.

I'm also assuming it's close to the classic beetle mechanically, just with a different shell.

Yep, VW intentionally shared as many parts between the two as possible. One of the more interesting differences between the two cars is the steering rack. Because of the lower fender clearance on the Karmann-Ghia, they had to put limiter blocks on the steering rack to prevent the driver from turning the wheels too far, else they would rub the tires on the insides of the fenders. For race-prepped KGs (because that's a separate brand of insane in which I'm currently engaged) you'll see folks who have either rolled out or simply ground out a bit of the front wheel arch, and then removed those limiters to allow a more Beetle-like turning radius.
