Hello Oppo! I am 17 years old and have been a long time enjoyer of both Oppo and Jalopnik. I do not have a car yet but am saving, which sucks. Anyway, I am taking a speech class at a local community college for high school credit ad I need some help withideas. I'm currently planning on speaking against autonomous cars in everyday lives. I want to bring in examples of not having control in panic situations and ethics like the thing on gizmodo a few days ago about whether your car should kill you to save others. Also here is a doodle plan that I started. Sorry about the handwriting and general mess but its what I have so far. Thank you all in advance for any help.

Also, you can ignore the maroon, those are mostly notes for me. By the way, have an evo for your troubles.

Try and think of it less as public speaking, and more as just explaining it to a friend (or group of friends). There's nothing worse than when people get up and go into 'speech' mode. Talk naturally, be yourself. Don't write the whole speech out, just know what it is you want to say, the points you want to cover, and talk about each in turn.

For the record, the name is "Keith" not "Kieth". Jut throwing that out in case you make visual aids. I think it's an admirable topic but depending on how strict your teacher is, you might be starting off on the wrong foot by speaking about something you have little to no experience with. You can make some points, but at only 17 years old you've been on the road for less than two years on your own. In fact, that presents a big fat counterpoint - You have little experience on the road by being young. You are statistically more likely to cause an accident for a myriad of reasons so it's not like there's a single factor that could be changed save for a longer and more stringent training program. Autonomous cars would protect safer, more experienced drivers from you YOUTHS!

There are arguments against what I just brought up. You're on your own from here. But be prepared to answer them just in case. Typically no one really cares in a speech class but if you give it your all and just swat down the few people who try, you generally just get a 100% even if you had some flaws.

One thing to consider for your argument is the possibility of this happening:

Oh no, I am in no way trying to bring my own experience into this. I am using others opinions since I know that I literally have no real experience behind the wheel. Also I have driven motorcycles in India whenever I go visit my extended family ad trust me, it is more chaotic there than you will ever hear. Considering I have been in the back of taxi's while the driver talks on the phone with one hand, shifts with the other, and pretty much honks at everyone with his knee, all while driving over 100 kph, age has nothing to do with distracted driving. To your comment about being statistically more likely to cause an accident, I believe that statistics are facts that are based in truth and really age has nothing to do with it as long as you focus on what is going on around you. I feel that it is just unlucky for me to be growing up in an age where many others my age prefer to be engrossed in technology as much as they can. I'm not exactly sure how I am going to word this, but if many of us youths were placed in the same situations as baby boomer's were when they were learning to drive, without technology to distract us, we would be just as safe. I have always believed that automakers are providing too much technology for our own good in cars. And while there are still phones and all kinds of stuff, a bare bones, no options econobox could actually be safer than a brand new "technologically advanced automobile". That said, I do believe that they would definitely make roads a lot safer, not just for youths, but for every distracted driver everywhere. I appreciate your help but I felt like I had to get that out of the way since I know I have no experience and that I am not going to use anything from my experience.

Our teacher literally has no opinion on what we choose as long as it is controversial and she believes that we will be educated about what we choose and how we talk about it, making sure we do our research and other things. I am trying to get all of my examples from others who (hopefully) have a lot of experience driving. Like, I know that I have no experience, so I am trying to use others to give me credibility. In the "What I want" section, I was planning on giving an example of having parts of our commute automated, such as highway driving and basic red light green light sensors. Also cars that communicate with each other to help keep traffic moving and to prevent bottle necks. I am not sure how to summarize it and get it into an idea that I could effectively communicate but those are my ideas for now.

Also, I have no idea how I misspelled Keith. Thank you.

Haha I need to see if I can get car hacking into there. It is a 5-7 minute speech with presentation so it will take some working around. Thank you too btw.

Yeah we just started the course on Monday and the speech+presentation is due in almost 3.5 weeks so I will most likely be comfortable around everyone then. Thank you for your help very much!

No problem, glad to help - it's worth if it there'll be one less bad speaker out there I might have to listen to one day.

Just remember, the whole point of all the speaking tips and techniques you'll learn is simply to get you to speak naturally. You're not trying to learn anything you don't already know, just some things to stop you stiffening up and being pompous or nervous or whatever.

Thank you again for the tips, the only thing I know that I have a problem with is speaking loud enough but it is a small room that we are in so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. But yeah, like you said, I'll be learning to speak more naturally over the weeks. This is my second college level course (I took US History last summer) and it's also the first one I am worrying about slightly since I've never been much of a talker. Thank you again!

Something to avoid is building up to it like it's a big deal, because really it's not. Imagine if I said I was going to make you walk twenty feet, and it's no big deal, right? Now imagine I spend weeks telling you all about something called 'public walking', and you think all that time about your big walking test. Suddenly, you start worrying about stumbling and that kind of thing.

I used to be like that. Speaking to a crowd would be something rare, something I'd know about in advance, and I'd overprepare and get nervous as hell. Since then, I've been chucked into situations enough times where I've had to speak to a group on zero notice that I've found that when you do that it's not a problem - you just stand up and say whatever you were going to say.

No-one's going to care about the kinds of things people worry about. If you stumble over a word, or pause to think for a moment, that's fine - people do that all the time when they're talking. (OK, one exception that happens to everyone who worries about it: that dream where you're up there talking and then realise you're not wearing any pants, classic anxiety dream, that doesn't happen all the time in reality...)
