Was stuck in traffic on 495 when I noticed the entire world was thumping, looked around stupidly for a second and then looked up. Two incredibly huge and badass twin-rotor Chinook helicopters passed over us really low! I was too slow on the camera to get both in the pic but here's the second one. Never seen them in the air so close before. Awesome.

Ha, I was on the 14th street bridge when they flew over me.

So cool! Probably my favorite heli.

So they went that way, eh? Were they still as low?

von! von chinooks!
very cool though. I grew up behind an australian air force base and training ground, hearing chinooks ALWAYS take me right back to my youth

Oh they're awesome alright. Until you have to maintain them. I have the biggest love/hate relation with these birds. Can't really tell from the picture, but they look like CH-47Ds, and if 495 is the 495 I'm thinking of, they're from the NY or CT National Guard.

Yeah, the rear doors were open, and there were soldiers standing there, enjoying the view.
(No photos, phone was in pocket, butt was on motorcycle)

And it's quite a good picture, if I may add...

Right outside Washington DC actually. Mad restricted airspace.

May come as a surprise, but the Flight Engineer's position on the Chinook is the ramp.

Ah. I was thinking 495 in Mass. Still, you did manage to see the best helicopter in the Army today.

But, the most important question:
Did it go soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi?

495? Like… the L.I.E? Aka, Long Island's parking lot?
edit: sometimes I actually read before I post. This was not one of these times.

No, I-495. DC's parking lot.

Chinooks don't go soi. Helicopters like the Chinook and Huey, pretty much any helicopter that has large blades go whop. And yes, I know the video.

Nice, I've seen some neat stuff driving around DC. I saw a flock of Osprey flying over the tidal basin, have seen some Chinooks, but the best is when the Blue Angels are in town. I had them come over Suitland Parkway (Andrews) at an obscenely low altitude with two upside down, one right side up just as I drove through. Scared the crap out of me, talk about goosebumps. They came in for Annapolis graduation the other day in tight formation right over my house. Fat Albert plodded by about 20 minutes later. Too bad they don't do the JATO take off anymore.
