You are right, black hides the ugly pretty well. No sharp lines and heavy contrast in black.

This trend needs to die.

All other colors look horrible. This is best as a quasi Blade Runner spinner/Batmobile thing.

Gray wheels look way better than black IMHO.

All Ferraris look best in black. Why do people dispute this?

Black wheels. Or how to make a nice rim design indistinguishable.

That's it! I'm painting my rear drums this weekend. Yellow! That says 'performance' right?
Haha. I don't own any cars with drums.

Red calipers are kind of acceptable on performance cars, or cars with enhance brakes.
Sadly, in most situations, they just painted red and not enhanced. There's a trend here among VW owners which consists of putting a GTI bumper and logos / rims / caliper paint on your standard Golf. Kinda sad. Putting GTI badges won't make your car a GTI.

I remember a black Cavalier with chrome rims (I'll use that word because that's the word bro driver would use) had chrome rims with paper thin 5-spokes and rattle can painted calipers and drums. DRUMS! Yellow. Rattle car. Drums.
