As we all know, the Ford GT was a very special car. It was built for Ford's 100th anniversary as a modern version of the Le Mans wining and Ferrari ass kicking GT40. It was Ford's supercar, but it was only around for three years. Since then, Ford has teased the world with a couple of Shelby Concepts that started rumor mills about a replacement for Ford's supercar that never came to fruition. So, with Ford making huge profits now, why not splurge a bit and make a new supercar?
So, here's my worthless opinion on what needs to be built: Start with Ford's upcoming Eco-Boost 2.3L 4 cylinder.
"Gasp!" you say, "A 4 banger supercar? You're shitting me, right?"
No, I shit you not. You start with the EB 2.3 and turn up the wick on it. Instead of the 300-odd horsepower it will have in the new Mustang, you give it a very reasonable 500 HP.
"OK, you're insane, but I'm listening. But now what are you proposing Ford do with a crack smoking 4 banger?"
You make a 2 seat carbon fiber monocoque and put the motor behind the driver.
"So, just like everybody else?"
Kind of, but you give it an advanced AWD set up with a high-performance suspension and a proper manual transmission.
"You lost me a 'proper manual transmission,' why would you spend all of that time and effort and not give it a dual-clutch?"
To keep the weight down and save money by not developing a good DCT. You also get to market the car as being special.
"Well, I like it so far, but what will it look like? Will it be sleek and sexy?"
Uh, no. It'll look like this:

Now that's what I call a curveball.

Such a great idea. But I suggest just carry over the 2.3 from the Mustang and give it a hybrid setup. Then Ford looks cutting edge like the hyper cars and the i8

I like where your head is at. Ford has certainly done some crazy things in the past and enjoys honoring their history. I think if they were to do a reboot of the RS200, they would not copy the look. In fact, I believe the look would be readdressed and whatever new car would simply be the spiritual successor of this famous (and infamous) rally car.

Here's a whole room full.

No hybrid crap!
This would be a 0-60 in under 3 seconds car.

500 hp from the 2.3? ambitious.

If Ford just made a spiritual successor that put styling above function, I would cry.

I'd buy it. I'd buy it so hard.

Yeah, let's celebrate the thoroughly outclassed RS200.
"Factory driver Kalle Grundel 's third place finish at the 1986 WRC Rally of Sweden represented the vehicle's best-ever finish in Group B rallying competition, "
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_RS20…
Third. The best it ever got. Thoroughly mediocre. Not worth celebrating.
Now the Escort RS is something worth celebrating, because it won stuff

If you don't get why the RS200 is special, then you never will.

If you continue reading you'll see it ran very few Group B events. Finishing third in its first event out is very impressive.

Point is, all group B cars were spectacular. The RS200 just wasn't successful. If you want to celebrate something, celebrate something successful. Not something that has known little success or relevance. It's a sad story. Ford put time and effort in something that could've shaped up to be a world beater. But it was too late. It's not a bad or unimpressive car, but its palmares are thoroughly mediocre.
Do you know Luis Ocaña? He could've been one of the all time greats. Yet nobody remembers him.

Could you clarify this "but it was only around for three years"?
Are you referring to its production period or model years? If production period, then you're technically wrong but mostly right. Production began in very small numbers in 2003 to coincide with Ford's Centennial celebration and didn't end until September 21, 2006. However, "regular" production didn't start until 2004. If you're referring to model years, then you're definitely wrong as there were only 2005 and 2006 models.
Regardless, I think your idea is very interesting. What would you expect your idea's MSRP to be?

I averaged the model and production years.
It would be probably $120,000+

From what I understand, that's essentially what they did with the GT. Matching the styling to the original car was so important that it drove them into all kinds of weirdness with the design.
I wouldn't feel bad if they changed the styling on the RS200 successor. The RS200 is essentially a tube chassis race car with a cobbled together body. The GT wasn't like that. They could keep the look of a RMA layout, low slung, but they would almost certainly try to integrate their current styling trend.

I love the way the RS200 looks. I wouldn't take much to modernize the design without making it look like all the rest of the line, which it shouldn't.

- Censored comment about wagons - Heresy, I know. But for the RS200, the bulging headlights and the parts-bin rears have got to go. The rest of the car actually looks pretty good but the front fascia needs some work.

The headlights must remain! With covers, they might actually work well with modern pedestrian/aero.

It's more niche than super, but I'd love to see something along the lines of the Bronco concept. It'd be a super car to me!
