A number of articles have suggested Lincoln might construct a car based off Ford's Mustang platform.

However, most of them are from 2012, two years ago. Do any of you still see this happening? A possible Continental coupe based on the Mustang?

Its what could help Lincoln out alot. Maybe call it the Cougar?

I honestly don't see it happening.
The market for a what I'm guessing would be a modern luxury boat would be somewhat limited.
Now if Mercury were still around, I'd want a modern Cougar.

The old Lincoln LS and Mustang both used modified versions of similar platforms back in the day. The Lincoln LS was a great car, it deserved a better fate.

They wouldn't have to make it a "luxury boat", but maybe make it compete against the ATS Coupe and 4-series?

If the MKZ's body was on a RWD platform, that'd be one of the best cars of ever.

I agree that it wouldn't have to be a luxury boat, but that's what comes to mind when I think of Lincoln.

They might as well. The Lincoln LS underpinned the modern Mustang, they could give something back to the donor. Lincoln is hurting, they need something fresh and interesting. A less hardcore, more comfortable GT type of Lincoln with RWD and V8/ecoboost could do well against Cadillac, BMW, and others depending on the styling. Bit "depending on" at the end though. I would consider one if they built it.

I would support that. I can't say I'd buy one, but Lincoln needs to do something to shake up their status quo, there are some seriously boring cars that they put out. They never really had the sports car image though, I definitely agree that mercury would have made more sense to have a badge engineered mustang.

It might've done better if it had Mustang engines...

I think I'd go nuts if I saw "Lincoln Cougar", lol.

Actually, I'd be very interested to see what this would look like with their current design language- I'm thinking swoopy sexy long-hooded Mark IX. Lincoln really needs a premium RWD coupe in my opinion, would do wonders to revive the image.

With there current release of two new crossovers on the horizon I don't see Lincoln developing a rear drive platform. At least until Alan Mulally steps down. (Hopefully very soon.)

What is wrong with a modern day luxury boat? I know the focus is on sports luxury but the old money would probably enjoy and buy up a luxury boat. Make it stylish and market the hell out of it and maybe some new money would buy it as well.

The Lincoln LS was all jaguar my friend.

What I'm wondering is who will the demographic be?
Older folks, Sure. But not everybody is wealthy enough for a Car like that.

The beautiful concept that was known as the MKR is what you're hoping for.
It's an abandoned concept unfortunately.
I know you'd like them to make an ATS fighter (saw other responses) but the MKZ fits into that segment. They won't build a competitor to the MKZ. The MKS is due for an upgrade sometime soon, maybe they'll have the balls to do that, but I suspect it will be a FWD/AWD Taurus copy again, because the Taurus is due as well. RWD won't be an option.
Don't worry, I'm just as sad as you. But the MKZ (which I've talked a lot about on here lately) gets SERIOUSLY ignored in a performance aspect. Never forget the MKZ with Michilen Pilot Super Sports beat an M5 on a slalom and gave a 911 a run for it's money.

i don't think the mustang's platform supports AWD

Agreed but sometimes starting at the top and making it exclusive is the best way to revive a brand image. Tesla did this brilliantly.
![]() 04/24/2014 at 11:22 |

Tesla did do it great, but Lincoln has been around for longer and has more image to live up to, Two steps above Ford and one step above Mercury. In luxury level at least.
It's going to be for somebody who wants a Mustang, but also wants Luxury features which is going to be a hard nut to crack.

I am personally afraid that Lincoln is going to become the next Mercury. Mercury used to be the tier above Ford. Ford doesn't have anything to fill that tier and I think they will (have) sacrificed Lincolns brand image to fill that void.

Good nuts or bad nuts?
![]() 04/24/2014 at 11:33 |

lol, bad nuts. Unfortunately.

Well Mercury is dead. o.o idea. Revive Mercury....make it the SVT version of Lincoln
![]() 04/24/2014 at 12:11 |

We have to mate that car based off the mustang+ Ecoboost Twin Turbo
![]() 04/24/2014 at 12:16 |

I fully agree. It was sort of the "Survival of the fittest" Mercury was knocked out, and Lincoln had to fill in the gaps between their esteemed position, and the slightly lower tier position that Mercury once held.
![]() 04/24/2014 at 12:28 |
|
Maybe if they wanted an ATS or 3 Series fighter. But my money is on them letting Lincoln whither and die, while it soaks up the high margin sales from the badge engineered products.
![]() 04/24/2014 at 13:53 |
|
And what worries me is if Mercury became redundant what is stopping Lincoln from a similar fate?
![]() 04/24/2014 at 14:01 |

Which was Ford...
I get your point, but we can't provide Jaguar a version of the Mustang now can we? :)
![]() 04/24/2014 at 14:23 |
|
Yeah, What I'm hoping is that Lincoln isn't digging it's own grave.
Having a middle tier brand is nice, but there needs to be something else to fill that void or Lincoln will fill it.
![]() 04/24/2014 at 14:26 |
|
haha, I get your point too.
With how awesome Jag has been doing I can't even imagine what they'd do with the new Mustang platform

Agreed, thanks India (I guess).
Good question, sounds like some sort of drunken night in Vegas. A sultry British temptress, a muscular country boy. 9 months later, who knows WTF they would have.

LOL
that would be hysterical.
British classy sports car
American brutish pony car
???
Profit
