For those of us that think modern ultralight aircraft are too safe and boring.

probably about the same except for stability. Who needs that, right?
I have an uncle who flew Hiperlight similar to the one shown over Mt. Rainer. Probably up around 15,500 ft to pull it off. He ended up crashing it a couple of years later and got into real planes as it was a bit safer.

Old planes are not Jalop, but are cool.

Old planes are totally Jalop. Here is why:
1) Questionable safety.
2) They were developed by people who were passionate, but didn't totally know what they were doing.
3) These same people had huge egos, but weren't quite "normal".
4) They used them to do a number of things simply because they look good ideas. "Think you can fly the English Channel. It's never been done.", "Sure. Here, hold my beer."
4) Garish paint jobs.
5) Leaking oil is a feature and not a problem. Not leaking oil is a problem.

It is. I wish I could say I took it. If I knew who did, I'd credit accordingly.
