What's up with the current trend of tiny little squinty headlights combined with a huge gaping grill? Everybody seems to be doing it. The new Jeep Cherokee, the new camry, that honda a few posts down, a bunch of audi concepts, etc all are sporting this trend. What's the point, there's no way these tiny little engines need that big of a grill. Car companies, STAHP! This design trend looks ugly and as far as I know offers no real performance benefit.

Everyone wants their car to look aggressive now and what is more aggressive than a big mouth that will eat you and little eyes

The bigger the headlight the more oxidation in 5 years. On a serious note huge grills are horrible for drag coefficients.

What bothers me the most is how the whole bottom 2/3 of that grill is completely non function. Like wtf just extend the bodywork over that part and the car will look so whole. The mesh looks ridiculous on the camry

This stupid trend only started a few years ago and I'm already tired of it. Audi can pull it off well. Everyone else? No. Stop.
A smaller grill looks a lot better. Like this looks so much better.

I agree with you on this. Generally, your car's cooling system is designed to do its job under worst case conditions, i.e. towing a load in hilly terrain at high altitude. Most cars can survive DD duty with up to 50% of the grille blocked off. If you can make do with only half of this:
then there's no need for these huge gaping maws.

After publishing many The Forgotten Concept Cars of the Year posts, I can safely confirm that the designers are starting to run out of ideas, so they start copying each other. Don't forget automotive and pedestrian safety plays a factor in terms of design. If new cars had three wheels, then there will be new design elements (hello Morgan 3 Wheeler, how are you?). In other words, we're stuck with ageing design elements. We don't have any choice but to appreciate them.

Rose tinted glasses really fuck with one's perception, doesn't it?
Design trends. They're a thing. They've always existed.

This is one of the saddest things I have ever seen. We all know that the new Lexus' spawned this monstrosity. The difference is that Lexus worked to integrate it with the overall design of the car.
This reeks of absolute desperation to make the car look sporty. It looks totally cobbled together and like a very poor aftermarket solution.
Yuck. Yuck. And Yuck.

Coloured windows are back… again ? * slaps forehead * It was a trend in the 50's, mid 70's and late 80's. You're right, history can repeat itself, unfortunately.
