71 or earlier GTO or Lemans, My favorites are the 67's and 69's. 68 and later are a little smaller. All Awesome.

Real muscle car and $10k max don't really go together too fluidly. And I'm not one to advocate making a clone car, since I've got a special place for the "base model" cars that we don't see too many of today. That being said...if you look in the right places, you may be able to find mid-late 70s and early 80s F-bodies that won't need a ton of work. Same for C3 and C4 Vettes, which you can throw power at.

Browse around Craigslist and search around your general area. American muscle is everywhere you just need to know that a lot of it is going to be a bit rough around the edges. Here are a few camaros, the last link looks particularly interesting to me.

That's why I included Lemans. You won't get a show car but certainly you could get a nice driver with a swapped out 350 for 10k or less.

True, however most people have GTO cloned le mans cars and ask to much for them lol

Very true, also prices have gone up so it may be really hard to find a nice driver for 10k. One can dream though. I've seen 69 Judge Values really go up in the last 15 years. My dream car so I've followed the trends on judges.

For $10k stick to unpopular makes or years. Buicks and Oldmobiles instead of Chevies, and mid-to-late-70s vs late 60s. I'm thinking a Cutlass or a Torino might be viable choices.

4th Gen F-Bodies
These are as close to a "Real Muscle Car" as you can get for 10k. Late generation SS's can be found for under 10k. These have the LS motor and good 6 speed manual. Not to mention the Platform goes back to the 70, so you're getting Gen 2 driving dynamics!

What are you looking for? A cruiser? A speed machine. I'd argue that muscle trucks are the cheapest way to get straight line speed (any muscle car is only going to be good for straight lines anyways unless you dump loads of money into it).
I picked up my 454 powered 74 C10 for 2 grand, put some work into the engine/exhaust and other areas and have a bitchin street rod for just around 5 grand.
If you want something nicer or more refined, look for the off brands. A 70 Chevelle in decent condition with nothing special (350/350 combo) will go for 15 grand, while an Olds Cutlass or a Buick Skylark? (Skylark I think, maybe some other model) will go for 10 grand for a similar combo. Same generally goes with Camaro/Firebird, Mustang/Cougar, etc.
Also, depending on your abilities, a build of something less desirable (like that third gen Chevelle you have pictured, I think it's a 74) can be bought in decent condition for way less than the desirable generation (why my 74 third gen c10 was way cheaper than a more desirable 67-72), and offer more budget for building to the extreme.
Final word of advice: price out the car and your intended mods before you buy it. And be very generous with pricing. That's about 95% of the reason I've kept the cost on my truck so low; because I knew exactly what I'd be paying for everything before I even bought the truck.

I keep that in note. I was going for a street machine but nothing crazy. I wanted a coupe.
