.... be so fugly on the inside? Or is it just me?

I don't think it's so bad. And as far as interiors of the period go, it's pretty nice.

This was super fashionable in the day. Still looks great to me. I hate the floor hinged pedals though.

I hate the steering wheel, but the rest is fine.

It's the wheel. It has gotz to go.

I kind of like it. It's period-correct and has a unique style about it. Take my opinion with a grain of salt, I also like the all blue interiors from 80's Mercs.

I think the parts that matter are incredibly good. It has a heart of gold ;)

Ignore the steering wheel and you'll see a simple straightforward interior. Although I'd be looking for something to replace the shifter boot.

I think that's what was throwing me off. The maroon too, but in my head it already looks better with a Momo steering wheel.

I was thinking about how I would go about a tasteful upgrade to that shifter boot. Maybe rob a black rubber boot out of a different car?
What I most like is the gauge cluster... I think they nailed the styling there but I can't get over the overpowering maroon-ness of the rest of it. It looks too much like the '95 Town Car that my parents bought for my sister to learn to drive on...

My answer is a poor design choice or, more likely, a product of its time period. It was a good idea/choice then, that didn't hold up over time. Essentially it's dated, but to me that means retro!

I think it's you. Sorry...
I'll take mine in dark blue with Fuchs wheels:

Shorten the shifter and add a standard boot, or of course gated is an option.

Shortening the shifter is a no no on these, and the boot is standard for the later cars. Gated would make me sad.

Yes it's an ergonomic nightmare, but I've always loved the way its laid out. Rev counter ahead means business. I would have to agree that the standard steering wheel is completely awful. It was the first thing to go during my restoration.

I could not agree more. But then again, I did used to own a 70's Beetle, and the interior resemblance is too much to beat with. Kidding. But the Singer version (as pointed out by alexotics) is so delightful with the special brown seats a la James May. The change in shifter and its boot, then the steering. So elegant...

The maroon makes it look a bit off, but it is one of those acquired tastes, my 944 has a maroon interior, after a while you start to like it. But I have the same steering wheel, the interior looks classy regardless of color but the steering wheel just looks cheap as shit. Which is why the go to steering wheel for any Porsche is always the 930
But with that maroon interior it would look a bit off, would have to accent the interior up with a bit more black and it would look awesome.

That wheel looks great... what model is it? If you don't mind me asking, do you have any galleries or forum write-ups about your build?

That's a great color. This one's also on Fuchs but it's hard to tell from the photos I posted.

How about if instead of a polished gated plate, you made it out of a dark ebony or oak?

This is the only place for a gated shift as far as I'm concerned...

I certainly do, enjoy...
