Who chooses to driveth or purchase any otherwise fun motor vehicle with an automatic transmission, for they do not require one.

Well, then they will never have the option of buying a manual, now will they?

Oh fuck off. The anti-automatic propaganda around here needs to stop already.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:09 |

I think it is. It also depends on how one defines an automatic.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:09 |

It depends on how many usable legs or feet you have...

I've got my ass kicked in autocross by a man who is wheelchair bound, but drives a stick M3 with hand controls for the pedals. Any excuse is not an excuse at all. I would buy a fast car with a twin clutch, but only if the entire point of the car was batshit straightline performance. This being said, I wouldn't ever wish to not own at least one manual car. I want to buy a mkv .:R32, and I could sell my car right now and have a nice one. I wouldn't dare do so because I could not bare the thought of not owning a stick car. I'll wait until I have enough money to have two cars, then I'll buy myself a mkv .:R32.

![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:12 |

Pretty simple, a car you don't need to shift yourself. I would agree that there are several types of automatics.
The 6F55 in my SHO is actually quite good, especially for a conventional automatic. Having come from a CVT and a Jetta auto before that, this thing is the bees knees. Had the SHO been available in a manual, I probably would've gotten that, haha.

there are going to be a lot of 911 owners missing feet

Surprise surprise. I'll take the highroad though.
If you don't think this car is fun, come on out I'd be happy to give you a ride.

As I commented on the 2015 C7 getting the Z06 8spd.. I daily drive within the city everyday, never legally getting about 60km/hr. For that particular car, if I owned a C7, the only other driving it would ever really see is long road trips, where it spends it's time in the top 2 gears cruising. AND I would never be tracking a brand new $65k car.
So for that instance I would most probably get the auto.
A 12 year old Miata, or a Solstice GXP, or a 'goat' GTO, yea I would be getting a manual.

This surgery had better involve the removal of a foot!
In all seriousness, best of luck. It's not that bad to rock the slush.

I'll admit it. I used to love automatics and talk shit about manuals (they're hard to drive in traffic, it gets tiring, modern autos are faster, blah blah blah). Truth is I was too scared to learn. OH FELLOW OPPONAUTS, FORGIVE ME!!!
(I only drive manual now, for the record. I hate automatics and I'll get a hand-operated clutch if I ever lose the use of a leg)

There's a teaching assistant at my school who drives a NA Miata.
An automatic NA Miata.
A rusty, automatic NA Miata.
A rusty, automatic NA Miata with peeling paint.
A rusty, automatic NA Miata with peeling paint and barely pumped up tyres.
A rusty automatic NA Miata with peeling paint, non-existent wiper blades and barely pumped up tyres.
A rusty automatic NA Miata with peeling paint, non-existent wiper blades, cracked bumpers and barely pumped up tyres.
And in other news, my history teacher drives an immaculate Porsche Carrera S and I prefer an MG TF over a Miata because I'm an anglophile yo.

In fact, my history teacher is a she! She's been at my school for many years now and her job is quite highly paid. I also think she's got a wealthy husband, because she had a Ferrari and a white Porsche 930 Turbo before. She sold the Ferrari first (wise choice, Hong Kong can hit 40ºC/104ºF in the summer) and kept the 930 Turbo. Sadly, I think it died a few months ago and I knew it was in poor condition because I could smell the petrol as I walked past and the turbo barely did anything for performance.
She's got the Carrera S now. She seems happy.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:29 |

Fuck, I feel sexist now. Also, she has impeccable taste. I imagine she's pretty interesting to talk to. A newer Porsche really can be the best of both worlds from what I hear.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:29 |

5 years ago sure, 10 years ago definitely. But with huge leaps in auto-trans, and DCT being more mainstream, even CVT have come along way.
It's getting to the point where automatic is to manual, what AWD is to RWD.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:31 |

Good analogy. For me, it's all about fun and not about modernity or performance, so I know that you can't force the rowing your own philosophy on anyone.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:32 |

I bought my 135is because I was specifically looking for a DCT car. It's the first car without a manual I've ever had. Manuals are fun but at some point I got tired of shifting all the time . Call me lazy or whatever else you want. I would still buy a car with a manual in the future but this go round I wanted to give my left foot a rest.

Can I keep my left foot if I buy a automatic for the soul pourpose of using it to tow my manual car to a track, as well as drive in the winter while my manual cars sit in a warm garage? Hypothetical question..fer now..

Nissan CVT?

![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:33 |

Definitely acceptable there...
BUT, Cummins 6MT Ram 2500?
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:34 |

She's had an interesting life - I heard she started out as a farmer!
And as for the teaching assistant - she is a dickhead. On to the road heading up the school one morning, everyone was queuing to enter the school. And then I see this clapped out red Miata sail past us on the wrong side of the road going all the way up the hill. And she's damn rude - she once said someone's name wrong and he tried to correct her and ended up getting an earful about being rude to your elders, how bloody ironic...

That's just as bad. I'll never understand why Ford put a CVT in those things.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:40 |

That would be preffered :P We'll see what happens when I can actually afford to make the Z barelly streetable, and then be able to afford a truck, haha
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:41 |
|
Yeah, a car that heavy...
I bought mine because the trans had a 3 yr/60k warranty on it. The damn thing broke at 2 years, 11 months, 3 weeks and 6 days into my warranty! I got a new trans in there completely free and promptly traded it in for the SHO.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:47 |

Your assumption is incorrect.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 12:57 |

Do you understand exactly how played out this manual thing is already? As the owner of one manual and one auto car, I'm definitely ready to see the manual relegated to it's place in history as a relic. I'm fine with having one for nostalgia's sake and for a bit of fun when you want something different... but it's not the binary awesome/not awesome choice that so many Jalopnik people make it out to be.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 13:03 |

I cringe whenever I see automatic C7s, such a shame. It means there will be less used manual C7s for me to enjoy :)

I get it, that's why I make jokes about it now. It's just part of what makes this site special, played out or not.

Actually, it is. I drive a manual Cavalier right now, but someday I will purchase my dream car a 1977 Continental, and it will be auto, and it will be glorious.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 13:17 |

Agreed. My dream car is a 1977 Lincoln Conintental. Guess what that comes with??

Just got knee surgery. (and I dd a manual). Was without said manual for about 3 weeks.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 13:19 |

Well...there are some excuses. You know...like land yachts. I dd a manual, but someday I will have my 1977 Lincoln, and it will be the most glorious thing in the world.

This man is correct - so we'll have to cut both of their feet off.

probably a C6 auto trans!

I will respectfully suggest that our interests are completely different and that no such '77 lincoln could ever be glorious. I respect your opinion, I just also respect my taste in cars differs so much from yours that I have almost 0 common interests with you.

That is probably true. Noone buys on of these to A) go fast or B) turn corners. It's car that's built for cruising down main street, and that's exactly what I plan on doing.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 15:30 |

Yes, there's a car that should not have a manual.
![]() 04/07/2014 at 15:54 |

My project has an auto. Come at me bro!
![]() 04/07/2014 at 18:45 |

Newer Auto's are apparently getting better 0-60 times and better mileage. Although I have a manual, their time may be ending.
![]() 04/09/2014 at 15:54 |
|
Well this is exactly the problem. Manuals, brown wagons and Diesels all used to be mostly jokes with a dab of truth. It switched to hostile-mode recently (1 or 2 years) and it's really not fun anymore. In that regard, I totally agree with Louros, tone it down a bit, let's not this place become a caricature of its former self, it is embarrassing.
![]() 04/09/2014 at 16:09 |
|
What you say about it becoming a caricature of its former self is so true. I never really liked to discuss this stuff seriously, as it was just my go-to joking topic, but people (like Louros) interpret it as serious which creates actual problems. Oppo has changed in many ways, and losing its fun dynamic has become one negative trend. For the record, I am not serious with my manual posts as it is a dead horse aside from typical Oppo joking...
