Breaking news out of Idaho! For a lack of anything else, Idaho State Police are now profiling drivers over which license plate they have. Because clearly everyone from Colorado is totally baked.

Amid recent allegations from junior Jalopnik correspondent Doug DeMuro that !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , new reports out of the Gem State detail a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Suck it, DeMuro.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

70-year-old Darien Roseen has two homes, in Washington state and Colorado. He was returning from his daughter's baby shower, but after crossing the Oregon/Idaho border he was immediately pulled over.

"Immediately after Mr. Roseen passed his location, Trooper Klitch pulled out from the Interstate median, rapidly accelerating to catch up with Mr. Roseen's vehicle"

This poor guy knew he hadn't done anything wrong, so he had a feeling something was up.

"After Mr. Roseen identified his possession of valid prescription medications, Trooper Klitch asked him, 'When is the last time you used any marijuana?' thereby assuming that Mr. Roseen had, in fact, used marijuana and inferring that he had used it recently"

Roseen found himself in the back of a police cruiser and was read his Miranda rights. Despite being told he was not under arrest, he still ended up charged with "inattentive/careless driving" for bumping a curb while pulling over. If he wasn't under arrest, why was he read his Miranda rights?

Roseen is now seeking punitive damages for constitutional violations. And presumably because Trooper Buzz Killington was totally harshing his mellow.

Colorado legalized skunky nuggets in late 2012, thereby giving police a reason to profile you when travelling out of state. Apparently just having a Colorado tag on your vehicle makes you look like a couch-locked bleary-eyed pothead.

So Colorado residents beware. Whether you are possessing the sticky icky or not — they are in fact out to get you, man.

This is ridiculous. I'm not even angry because of how truly silly this situation is.

Side note: Do Idaho cops use this generation Magnum regularly? I want, I want, I want. In high school I wanted a used SRT-8 Magnum, in retrospect, it may have gotten me in serious trouble.

Having an out of state plate at all will kind of make you a target flat out. Even if it's a silly reason to pull you over, if you can't get out of it right then and there you still have to take care of it down the line.

I know I got pulled out of a pack of ten cars one time in Frankfurt, Kentucky and oh that cop gave me the run around. Got real weirded out when I went to pull out my wallet and even wanted to search the car.

when I was finishing up High school we made a little impromptu graduation trip to a local fun center. 5 of us piled into a car and started on our way. By one of the toll booths we went through on the left side not realizing that the exit we needed was all the way on the left. The driver flicks on signal and cuts across 3 lanes somewhat aggressively but not terribly so since it was midday and no traffic. On the off ramp a cruiser flips on his lights and we pull over.. thus begins a 1/2 hour of officers trying to convince us that we are all drug addicts.

After collecting drivers info, he goes around collecting all our info as well as asking if we are on drugs.

"no"

when was the last time you took drugs?

"never"

do you have a dime bag in the car?

"no"

this goes on and on repeatedly for a 20 minutes. Eventually they tell us to get out of the car, empty our pockets, searched us, searched the car found nothing, and gave the driver a ticket for an insurance issue.

How is that a 'brush guard'? It's a set of what Australians would call 'roo bars, and the rest of the world calls bull bars. They're completely socially unacceptable in Europe on any car, unless there's actually a realistic chance of encountering a heavy animal in the road, because they're so dangerous. Of course they're aggressive: that's the whole reason people used to put them on cars, especially 4x4s and SUVs.

foregoing the fact that you seem to think a device specifically designed to ram other cars is not intimidating, the rest of the car is designed to look as menacing as possible. The Dodge Magnum seems to be designed in the first place to look intimidating, then the police painted it all black and tinted the windows. In a movie, it would be a car the bad guys would drive.

I don't know what large city you're from. But I can tell you that in rural parts of the country a bull bar is not 'specifically for raming vehicles'. More often than not it's for raming wildlife that decide to dart in front of your car on a whim. in fact in Texas(and I'm fairly sure this goes double in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming etc) hitting a deer is a VERY common occurrence. The bull bar saves these rural law enforcement agencies lots of money. but I have literally never heard of a car having to be ramed in a desolate place like that. Raming cars is more of a big city/Hollywood movie thing.

I was followed for some distance by cops 3 different times. As if they were just waiting for an excuse to pull me over. In the end I made it without ever being pulled over though. My worst nightmare would of been having to unload everything in the trailer on the side of the road so they could go thru it. Woah there, slow down buddy. Pushbars are for high speed chases and emergency situations. Other than that, I don't see what's so intimidating.

UPDATE: I see you told someone that these cars are purposely designed to look intimidating. Let me remind you that this car was not designed as a cop car. It's a road car converted into a police cruiser kind of like a Taurus or a Fusion police intercept. The police didn't reach out to the automaker and said make this car look intimidating. Plus, you'd have to be an Idiot to be intimidated by a car. The cop is the one with the power whether he is driving a Miata or a Magnum.

I am able to see your point on this, why the need for aggressively styled vehicles for city police? It sure dissuades me from approaching an officer in one, and it does make police seem as "the bad guys" especially when they abuse their power in a bad ass looking vehicle. Kind of like a bully. However, the use of these kinds of vehicles for State police forces (Highway patrol?) is almost inevitable. I'm not sure there's a cheap, large sedan/wagon out there able to perform at high speeds that doesn't have aggressive styling. The Charger, Magnum, Taurus, etc. all look pretty mean.

The police department didn't design the Magnum, Dodge did (I'm guessing they made it as menacing as possible to lure "macho" men away from SUVs, unfortunately it didn't really work). As for the colors, state troopers have all sorts of colors and designs, Idahos happens to be black with a white stripe. Not the most "friendly" colors but I don't think it's really any more intimidating than your average blue and sliver paint job.

That being said I can see how it would appear evil when compared to the Netherlands who's first search result is this...

If you look closely, the front door side windows are not tinted, only from the back doors on back are they tinted—which is how the Magnum comes from the factory. They also come in black. So the police didn't "paint it all black and tint the windows." They just bought a large, rear-wheel-drive car that meets the needs of the job. The black steel wheels and the front brush guard of course don't look stock, but they also don't look intimidating, they look like they serve a purpose. The brush guard protects the car from all the wildlife that dart across the road in this part of the country, and the steel wheels withstand the punishment that would destroy alloy wheels. There's nothing intimidating about that car to me. Different interpretations I guess.

The careless/inattentive charge was for bumping the curb while pulling over after the cop hit the lights.

People are more easily intimidated now a days. Didn't a child get suspended for chewing a poptart into the rough shape of a gun?

I thought bull bars were there because of hitting deer. Guess I'm naive.

Actually, a lot of police departments are getting armored vehicles. SWAT responses have gone from a few hundred a year to several thousand. The militarization of the police is sickening. We're moving towards a police state and the masses all stand around singing the national anthem and screaming for more police support.

Their vehicles are as close to "murdered out" as you can get...and also, what's up with the parking on the median strip deal? They do that around here (suburban philly) and sometimes leave the ass end of the car poking into the nearest lane. Totally meant to intimidate, it's not even close. Yeah, nothing sez "to protect and to serve" like tinted windows.....

Last summer my GF and I took temp summer jobs out in rural CA. My car had VA plates hers had PA plates. Getting pulled over was a weekly occurrence for the two of us. After the second stop we drove like saints to avoid getting pulled over as much yet they would always find a reason. My GF even got pulled over by the same cop twice in one day once on her way to work and once on her lunch break. We took a weekend trip to San Diego and visited the Salton Sea on the way back and got stopped at a checkpoint. Before the cop was even to our window he was asking us to pull aside to search the car.

Being from VA I always feel nervous driving in states that only require rear license plates. The feeling is mutual.

I can relate. I had a NY cop pull me over for a burned out headlight — when both my headlights were working. He then tells me I look stoned. I was sober, not even one beer that night. He asks me if I had been smoking weed, and I hadn't smoked anything. Not even a cigarette. He takes me out of the car, runs several field sobriety tests. Searches my car without consent, then gives me a breathalyzer.

After 15 - 20 minutes of this nonsense, he had to let me go. I hadn't broken any law. Didn't even get a warning ticket for the headlight, because it wasn't really out. He was a stupid pig.

Millions and millions of normal cars do not have a giant push bar on the front of their hood yet SOMEHOW survive driving in rural places. I lived for 25 years in a very rural area with lots of deer and other large animals. That bar will do very little when hitting an object at speed. It's probably attached by like 2 small bolts. The actual safety features of the car - crush zone, engine, airbags, etc. - are what will mitigate an impact. I 100% agree that that Magnum epitomizes many of the issues with the way we currently police our society.

Also:

European police cars. Visible. Approachable. Engaged with community. Capable of ramming. Cool:

Well, I did say it's more acceptable in places where animal strikes are much commoner. The bars are very dangerous to people, though, so there's a trade-off to be made between saving money and killing people - which obviously depends on how relatively common the two things are.

"Either way, how is a piece of metal meant to protect the front of a vehicle, whatever the hell you want to call it, aggressive?"

As a matter of style, the styling is aggressive. That is why people used to have them despite not having any need for them. I don't know enough about design terminology to explain why some things look aggressive and others don't. Ask a designer. That such is the case, though, is indisputable.

There is only conjecture by the plaintiff that the reason he was pulled over was the Colorado plates. It's pretty normal when someone is pulled over for eratic driving (or inattentive/careless driving in this case) to ask them if they've been drinking or using drugs. He's surmising it was because of his plates.

As far as the miranda rights, I'm guessing the cop figured he would read them early, in case he found something and didn't have time or forgot. Sort of a pre-emptive strike.

It's quite funny because in Europe, take Germany for example, all of the police drive Mercedes E-klasse wagons. No tinted windows, no searchlights - just a stripe of blue paint that says "Polezei" and a light strip up top. They don't seem to be having any trouble apprehending baddies.

I'm and American living in Germany for a semester. Believe me, the Polezei here are far more approachable, in appearance and practice, than Police in the united states. And one of the biggest reasons they don't intimidate me or seem unapproachable - they drive un-intimidating cars.

Almost. Most cops here drive Golfs. Highway police drive usually A4's and Volvos.

They used to drive Porsches. Part of the reason for buying the Targa was to look less intimidating and more approachable.
