..to kill pop-up headlights?
Who cares if they're horribly inefficient and break all the time? They make any car look so much cooler.
Even 90's econo-boxes look cooler.

Communists. It was their idea.
Probably not. I have no idea.

I blame pedestrian safety regulations

Fucking pedestrians.

Let us also not forget:
Such a satisfying "clunk" when the lights popped up. And sort of generally...weird and frog-like.

It was a cold dark night in the European Automotive Regulations office, across the street and across the ocean, car companies and car owners dealt with problems that arose from a part that would be a danger to pedestrians if the motor were to not work. EU regulations for pedestrian collision made it more and more difficult for popup headlights to be a viable choice.
And eventually, the last car with pop up headlights drove through a through a tunnel representing the numerous iconic automobiles with pop ups in history, as it parked on the side of the tunnel, and turned its headlights off for one last time. A soft electric motor sound whirred as the seals made a whoosh sound going into their compartment. The light in the tunnel dims. And the popup light was no more.

Killed the hood ornament, too.

That was depressing.

I know that feel, bro. I miss seeing Jaaaaags jumping off hoods.

Who needs safety when you're being impaled by a growling cat.

Probably true.

aerodynamics. Aerodynamics ruined pop ups.
Also crash testing for pedestrians. Though I do like them.

Pedestrians need to learn that the road is for cars and we wouldn't have this problem!

Unlike popups, I find that a pedestrian as part of the front fascia of my car does not make it aesthetically pleasing.

Idiots that walk out into the street without looking first?

What about concealed headlights?
I could see someone taking a stab at bringing those back one day. It'll be as close as we'll get to the rebirth of pop-up headlights.

Aww yes. Concealed lights are pretty great as well.

Agreed. I didn't get it before I bought the X1/9.
Now I get it. Popups are brilliant :)

Popup all the lights!
![]() 03/30/2014 at 13:11 |

actually, no. they don't

You mean if the lights popped up. It didn't happen very often so it was truly satisfying to hear the clunk and know you'd have a little light for a change.

Good point. Oddly though, on mine that was one thing that worked reliably. There were plenty of other things breaking on a regular basis.
