A man received the following text from his neighbour:

I am so sorry Bob. I've been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been tapping your wife all the time. I'm not getting any at my house, but that's no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology, along with my promise that it won't happen again.

The man, feeling anguished and betrayed, went into his bedroom, grabbed his gun and without a word, shot his wife and killed her.

A few moments later, a second text message came in: Damn spell-check. I meant "wifi", not "wife".

He knew what the neighbor meant. That two-timing bitch had been giving out the password! HIT HER WITH BOTH BARRELS.

It's actually illegal to log onto someone else's wi-fi without permission. Even if it's open to the public.

This applies to wives as well.

Seriously? It's illegal to connect, even if it's not password-protected?

Related: is it illegal to enter a person's home if their door is unlocked?

I guess it'd fall under trespassing, not breaking and entering...

Going onto a person's open WiFi could also be considered trespassing, I suppose, although the fact that they are projecting access into the street (or your home) complicates the matter.

Yup. It's illegal.

It looks like this is all about accessing someone else's computer. Using open wifi to access the internet is a different thing; did I miss the section that addresses this?

That's why you need two-factor authentication. Gotta have the right dongle to get access.

It also applies to wireless routers these days (act was written in '86).

Here's a cool article:

Thanks. So, technically illegal, but something that probably won't be prosecuted unless you're obvious/flagrant/malicious about it.

Fun fact: my SSID is... This LAN Is My LAN.
