Hi team, strange noise on startup on my '94 E34 540i. Only does it sometimes and more often when hot/been driving it for a while. Never at idle or any other time, only occasionally on startup.

Doesn't sound like a typical loose/too tight belt whine. Any other ideas?

lol who knows, kinda sounds like the starter doesn't retract right :] But it could be anything. My advise, keep it simple, don't fall into "typical BMW" issues. This is a car issue, not a BMW issue.

Doesn't sound like a belt. There would probably be squealing if the belt were bad.

Ding, right on the buzzer, sounds like the starter gear isn't retracting properly. I'd swap the starter out, if the teeth on the fly wheel have become warn you may need to shim the starter further away, but drive off that bridge when you get to it.
