It's my buddy Todd competing in the Vegas finals. Even Dennis (Grave Digger) and Tom (Max-D) said they were amazed by the altitude he got. Supposedly he was over 60 feet up.

He's higher than Matt Farah in that pic, even by monster truck standards. It looks like a huge amount of fun and less serious than almost any competitive series, although I can't fathom how most of those teams are making money from it.

Ticket sales, TV, and merchandising. Unless things have changed in the past few years most of the biggest teams are actually owned in part by Clear Channel Entertainment, the same company that runs monster jam

By the way, here's Todd's full run

That was incredible. I haven't seen much MJ in a while but that would win 99% of the freestyle shows I've seen. Two backflips, what the hell.

Actually the second backflip was in bonus time and Todd won the competition

Nope, Feld Motorsports, a subsidiary of Feld Entertainment, owns Monster Jam. And only about 30-ish trucks are owned by them, about 85% of the trucks are independent.

Badass truck, much altitude, huge balls = compressed spine?

Or in simple form, "Didn't that hurt?"

So Clear Channel sold it off? Any idea how long ago? And Feld may "only" own 30-ish trucks, but which 30 is it? Technically I said they own most of the big names, not most of the field ;) Hell, 30 trucks is two fewer than the number of trucks that were at the Finals

Live Nation spun off of Clear Channel in 2005, then Feld Entertainment bought the motorsports assets in late 2008. Trust me on this one ;)

Yeah, it may be more like 40 chassis now, I don't really know the exact number.

Crap! I forgot all about the Live Nation spinoff. I used to call Live Nation "New Clear Channel" when they first broke off, that probably doesn't help. Don't worry, I believe you, my knowledge isn't exactly up to date. I used to work for one of the venues they visited, but left for greener pastures around 06-07. Kinda stopped paying attention to Monster Jam after that. Sounds like it's still the case that the organizing entity owns the highest profile teams though. Always felt like that was a bit unfair for the independent guys, since Monster Jam entry lists are (were?) based on invitation, and of course the body is going to give the teams they own top priority for the higher profile events.

What venue? I probably haven't been there, just curious.

Donald in Titan, Koehler in Avenger, Mikey Vaters Jr. in Overkill Evolution, Greg Winchenbach in Crushstation, several other independents are killing it as of late.

Yep, that's the one. Jack's little black book brought in some interesting guests. One year we had Rusty Wallace, Al Unser Jr, Sarah Fisher, and Sammy Swindell racing in Silver Crown cars. I got to have lunch with Al, which was pretty awesome.
