This.
I used to volunteer for a dog rescue, and many people would just walk right past the adult dogs and swarm the puppies.
There was this one dog—beautiful, great disposition, friendly as could be, but he was blind. He had adapted and got around just fine. People who made it over to the adult dogs would look at him, ooh and aah, and as soon as they found out he didn't have eyes, walk away. Heartbreaking. The good news is the rescue never gave up on him and eventually found him a great home, bless them.

This is great. I got my cat, George, when he was about 6 years old. I still have him now, 10 years later and I love the guy to death.

This is making me so sad :(
I now want to become a crazy cat... man?
;_;
Nobody would adopt my cat now. He's 13, nearly 14, and starting to get senile. Over Christmas break when it was super cold out, he stopped eating unless you really pushed him. It ruined three or four days straight for me. but he's the best cat on the planet.

My heart goes out to older animals at shelters :(

My family helps foster dogs, we have had several dogs come through in similar situations. One was about 10 years old and neglected, as my mom put it "his love tank was empty", he would walk up to whoever was at the computer and sit down with his head on the person's leg just looking up at them and enjoying being around people. The guy who adopted him works from home and made this dog a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, in addition to walking about 2 miles a day with the dog. Stories like this are what keeps our family involved in dog fostering.

One cat was hit by a car, resulting in a lost left eye and some nerve damage (he drools a bit when he purrs), and was put in a shelter. My mom went looking for a cat and asked for one that no one would ever adopt, she was brought to this cat who was about 3 at the time. Nine years later we still have the best cat we could have ever found, never once has anyone in our family felt she made the wrong decision.

Suddenly, I got a piece of dust in my eye.

I know this feeling, but my family did something about it! We went to adopt a new cat and saw two beautiful kittens there. One was a super sweet orange and white who was purring for everyone. The other was a timid orange and white who hid in the back of the cage. We looked closer at the black and white and saw he was polydactile (extra toes). We decided right then that was the one. He would have stayed there for months just because he wasn't friendly. Here we are 5 years later and he's sitting on the bed behind me as I'm writing this. He is still a little timid, but is a sweetheart when he opens up.

One more cat story. At night when my parents lived in Hollywood, a 5 or so year old female cat started coming in their window at night and sleeping next to their bed. The cat started coming earlier and earlier and staying later and later until she just stopped leaving in the morning. They named her Red and she lived with them for 12 more years until she passed away.

One of my cats drools when she purrs too, but not from any nerve damage as far as I know. I just take it as a sign of love

This is George, BTW. Big fat bastard, but the best cat I've ever had. Hopefully my picture works. Kinja be kind.

That is so great...we got our dog when he was three, had been a stray who hadn't been well cared for. But he's an amazingly gentle, friendly, affectionate companion. Wouldn't trade him for the world.

Geroge looks awesome. My family adopted some 2 year old cats after the cats we got with our house (does that count as adoption if you get them with a property??) died from old age.
Unfortunately one (we suspect) got eaten by a wildcat after less than a year, but the other one lived with us for many many years until she died at about 14. It was too bad that the other one got eaten, but honestly we had 5 cats there over the years and he was the only one that that had happened to.
