Got the seller down to 4600, should I worry about a 140k mile gearbox?

Manual or automatic?

Automatic, I'd be changing the fluid ASAP.

Manual, as long as the clutch feels good and it slided into gear fine I wouldn't worry.

I just bought a MazdaSpeed6 with 200k and it runs like a champ. Mileage is just a number. I've test drove cars with 40k miles that bad trans, and I've driven 300k miles cars that shift like a brand new car. Depends on how it was taken care of/driven.

It's an Automatic, sadly. That's my only reservation about it.

Well if I remember correctly the M6 shares a tranny with a lot of things. So at least it'd be really easy to replace/repair IF something happens.

I'd just make sure you flush the fluid, use only whats factory recommended (ATF, GL4, whatever) and you'll be good for a good while at the least.

I'm a big believer in doing what you can and hoping for the best from there. No one can predict when and if something will go wrong. But at least if it does break you can say you did all the maintenance you could to prevent it first.

Since I can't seem to see an ad or a year or anything, I will chime in as a resident Mazda expert/employee and say that so long as its not one of the 2004/2005 5-speed autos that had issues you should be fine. If it's a 6-speed auto, make sure NOTHING but Mazda T-IV fluid has touched it's innards. The earlier 5-speeds required MV fluid and are less picky, but right around 2004 and 2005 we saw a rash of failures. Should be fine by now, as I haven't seen any problems recently, and with 140k on it if it's gotten that far.....

The V6 (you said it's an s so I am assuming here its a V6) is finicky about oil changes, so if its got maintenance records that's a plus. If I can get the VIN from you I can check if any Mazda dealer history exists. If not changed regularly they start to burn oil, and timing chain guides wear out.

Also any squeaks or creaks from the front end is probably lower balljoints, and they are only serviceable with new control arms. They can be pricey, even aftermarket, and there are FOUR of them.

Other than that there's not that many issues with the cars. If someone threw a 6 wagon with a 5MT my way I'd be a happy man.

I don't think it's the V6, but it is an 05 and it is an auto. Any info would be greatly appreciated

D motor is the V6.

I'll run the VIN when I get to work in the AM.

Were you able to run the VIN?

Whoops, forgot. Had a busy morning. It is a V6 with a 6-speed auto, clean VIN no recalls, hasn't been to a dealer for service since 2007 at 63k. Looks like the owner back then didn't believe in dealer maintenance.

Looks like it was a company car though, so maybe they had a fleet garage or something?

If it's got maintenance records from the seller, I'd say yes. So long as you can get it checked by a mechanic before purchase also.
