So my wife was discussing what we're going to get after I sell the SVT Focus to her little brother next year. She mentioned that she liked the Lotus Elise, and I almost wrecked my car out of surprise. She said she thinks they look cool, but was unfortunately was under the mistaken impression that they were luxurious inside. So either way we defined the parameters for a car she would like: small, decently nice inside, and cool looking. Let's set the budget at 40k. Things we ruled out: Miata (I know), S200, E46 M3 (I tried). I suggested a TTRS and she liked it, but those are well out of the price range. Anyways Oppo, what could be a car that would be fun to drive/track that fits the cool, small, nice interior parameters? If we don't find anything, I'm just going to buy a Focus ST haha.

Boss 302?

Fiesta ST? Small, decent inside, better to drive than the Focus, and pretty cool-looking, if you're in the right frame of mind. Failing that... My lacking knowledge of what is actually available/decently priced on the US market makes it rather difficult to make a solid recommendation...
GT86?

Yea she doesn't like the Fiesta looks, and is kind of meh admit the GT86.

Mustangs are on the list, but I figured I would try to exchange out of the Mustang realm haha.

2008 Porsche Cayman S with only 18k miles?

That's me done, then. If you were in the UK, I'd have small, sporty car recommendations coming out my ears at that price point - second hand Jag XK'd do the job nicely - but I just don't know what's available over there.
Cayman/Boxster?

Go drive the BRZ. It's a bit better equipped than a FR-S. It's a gorgeous car. If she hasn't seen one in person she might be swayed.

This is a good one. She does like it.

Yea she's familiar with them my best friend has one.

Just showed her the Cayman S Alex suggested. She liked that.

Hahahaha I would have almost wrecked the car too! Some day.. Anyway, sounds like a z3 or z4 m coupe would fit the bill. You could snag a really nice 135i/335i for that price and still have some money to install some M3 parts to make a 1M/m3 for half the price. If you don't like BMW, a great Cayman S or maybe even a 996 GT3 (not sure on that) could be had for that (get the 2nd gen S engine). Since you have owned american, a NICE C6 could be had for that or a Boss 302. You have a ton of options, but those are all decent contenders. If you think you will miss the utility of your focus, you could also consider a really spec'ed up STI for that too.

You just going to have one car? My wife and I just agree on budget then stay out of each others hair when it comes time to replace one.
C5 Z06s are in that price range, to go with some of the other suggestions.

Focus ST! I just picked mine up yesterday! :)

This is a good one too.

No we will have 3. If she gets a new one I'll daily drive her truck. And she likes the new Vettes, I wonder if prices will drop much in the next year and a half.

All good suggestions. And not too worried about utility since we will be keeping her truck.

Where I am, you can get a C6 for well under 40k

She's not a fan of the looks. Forgot to say she shot those down. Same for 370s.

Prius
Rav4
CRV
Corolla
Come on, don't lie. You want something fun and sporty like those cars.

Used CTS-Vs are going for around 40k, both Coupe and Sedan
![]() 03/22/2014 at 16:14 |

Good idea. For 40k you could get a heckuva Boxster, too...
![]() 03/22/2014 at 16:14 |

Ahh...third car. The Evora is nearing 40k and should be well under that in another year. It has a pretty decent interior.

Well it all depends what you will be using it for. I will be looking in the high 20/ low 30 range in a couple years, so your price range now holds the cars I'll be looking at then. That is a HUGE field of cars so I would do some ebay shopping and just look around for something you like based on what you need. Really analyze what you do with your car and not what you dream about doing and look for the best car for the dollar at doing what you actually do. Happy hunting!

First gen Lotus Elan. They're still really cheap, so you ought to see it go up in value rather than dealing with depreciation. Handles better than an Elise (by repute), and the interior feels a bit less stripped-out even though it's about as basic:

I would love it, but probably too old for her haha. I bet it's pretty damn hard to find those too. But sure I've ever seen one.
![]() 03/22/2014 at 16:27 |

Damn man thanks for the list. Didn't realize some of those cars could be in that price range.
![]() 03/22/2014 at 16:28 |

Neither did I! In all seriousness, I think the NSX is a great idea. It's luxurious, reliable, easy to maintain, quick and, as a bonus, alright on gas.

Subaru Impreza comes to mind, but it looks terrible. Used Caymans are probably your best bet for good interior and schportiness. Also, you can get a V8 Vantage roadster for under fifty grand these days...

Haha that might be too fancy for her liking.

E 39 m5 classy when it needs to and at the touch of a button a brute, great interior fairly reliable if you keep on maintaince and the looks are timeless and it's a big car

I'm not sure, but I don't think they're all that rare over your side of the Atlantic. I've seen a few for sale for very reasonable prices last summer when I had a quick look.
I just had a quick look on Autotempest, and either they've gone up in value or only expensive ones are for sale right now. Still, a selection of nice ones around about $25-30k, which seems pretty cheap to me.
