I was on the bus this afternoon, looking out the window like I always do. We stopped at a stoplight and a black E38 740i rolls up next to us. It looked like it had just been cleaned and detailed. It looked absolutely beautiful. It was being driven by some old guy who mashed the go-pedal when the light changed, and it sounded glorious. It's a shame these cost twice their value to maintain or this would be a serious addition to my car search.

My dad has a 740i. He does nearly all the work himself on it, and it hasnt been any more unreliable than my moms tahoe. Biggest repair he had was when his radiator fan exploded, and that was a 3-4K job because of the ricochet damage.
Such a nice car, and i would actually recommend them to anyone, so long as you can prove it has been maintained to a degree.

Actually, maintenance isn't horrible. If you can DIY it's even more reasonable. No clue why everyone thinks BMW's from the late 90's/early 2000's are so unreliable...
Also, if you get the V12 750i, yes, maintenance will be a be more than the average Honda. Still not sell your left arm crazy. The 740i is much better for the guy looking for a sporty luxury sedan under $10k.

I saw one of these at a BMW show last summer with modern OEM wheels and was lowered just a little bit, it was perfect.

The first time I ever rode in a car above 100 mph and the first time I ever saw a car with an integrated cellphone that used your stereo speakers during a call: both of those firsts were in one of these. Oh so many years ago, it was. No SR20 (sorry).
