The C-130 Hercules was designed with neither arrestor hook or steam catapult capabilities. But in 1963 the two test pilots, who had never flown an aircraft with 4 engines, successfully completed 21 unarrested takeoffs and landings.
The test were highly successful, but considered too risky for routine carrier operations. Instead, the C-2 Greyhound was developed as a dedicated carrier onboard delivery aircraft. The pilot was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his participation and the airplane in the video is now on display at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida.

So why didn't this become a regular thing?

That was weird watching it takeoff. I'm not used to seeing such a slow takeoff from a carrier like that.

All the low-speed Herc-flying experts were more interested in the rolling tank drops.
Actually, I have no idea, except perhaps "margin of safety" and "C-130 is wide/difficult to line up and has no folding wings, bro".

I think this is more sketchy than the 130.

It was considered too risky for routine carrier operations and they switched to the C-2 greyhound for carrier onboard delivery.

I can tell you I wouldn't wan't to be on the carrier deck with four rotating blades of death heading in my general direction. That and the wing span probably prevented the deck from having various other staff/vehicles on deck.

Makes sense, there is a wide ocean of difference between repeatable with two pilots and SOP for a carrier. Imagine trying an unarrested landing when you come in heavy with fuel and the wind is switching directions.

They needed the Hercules so they could carry their multi-ton nuts safely.

Somehow I feel like I read that twice now.

There's a glitch in the matrix.

It was nice of Mr. Peabody to do the audio. Where was Sherman?
