So her Camry had a complete engine meltdown so she needs a new car. Her parents are buying and had some criteria, the car has to be less than $3500, less than 120k miles, and not need any repair work. Using all of that, I went searching. All I could find: old Saturns. I feel like for someone who isnt an enthusiast, those would work just fine. They're efficient and, from what I've heard, reliable. I found a 02 SC2 3 door with 111k. She likes it a lot. Should she get that, or get something else?

Could be subject to recall.

I'd try finding a 99-2002 Accord. They are getting fairly cheap, not terrible to drive, and nearly bulletproof.

Look for a Volvo 850. Chances are that the ODO dies somewhere along the way.

"No, too square and ugly" I don't know if I can date her anymore...

Engine Meltdown.....Made me think of this.....

I'm pretty sure that's about what happened to the internals. That's what happens when your parents neglect the car for 12 years then hand it off to you.

I had a '99 SC2 that I bought with 122k when I was 18 for $3000. Spent $1500 on a transmission and another $350 on a sensor that failed. Traded it in at 144k miles for $1400. It was slow and plasticy, but a gas miser and the quirky third door was cool. Just my $.02

Was the sensor the one that causes the car to shut off randomly while idling? Cause I've heard of a lot of Saturns having that problem eventually.

No it wasn't anything like that. I want to say EGR or PCV or something? I honestly don't remember. It just threw a check engine light when I needed an inspection sticker so it sucked extra...

Ahh, I see. Because when it was really cold my mom's Vue would stall out. I read it was a sensor that commonly failed on Saturns but wasn't sure. Heck, maybe her car is part of the recall.

The funny thing about that is my first girlfriend's first car was a Saturn. It literally started falling apart and I got worried for her safety. So much so that I ended up buying her a used Volvo cause she was broke and I thought we were going to get married after being together for a long time. But we didn't and I'm out a Volvo, lol.

My son had a 2000 Saturn. Great gas mileage and no maintenance. Plain Jane but...

That's why I feel it would be great for her. She just needs something that gets good mileage and can get her from point A to point B
